I defy you, in your imagination, to come up with a more ideal environment for human learning than life, than this life. It seems to me, in my gloomier moments, a kind of celestial boot camp, replete with obstacle courses which have been, almost fiendishly, designed for our learning. --M. Scott Peck
-------------------- Let it be seen that you are nothing. And in knowing that you are nothing... there is nothing to lose, there is nothing to gain. What can happen to you? Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. It will only destroy what you are not. --Jac O'keeffe

A first world perspective. I doubt it applies to the starving baby in Africa.

I like that one a lot!
Most of our misery is rooted in the irrational belief life should be different than it is.
It's common to view suffering as a "problem", instead of a doorway to growth.
The concept of heaven, a life where nobody struggles or suffers, is based in ignorance.
When we reject reality, we enter the trance of resistance, which is a neighborhood in Hell.
Our words reveal how we resist was is, and wish for things to be different.
"The weather is terrible."
"My neighbor drives me crazy."
"The lines at the grocery store were horrible."
"They had a bad marriage."
"Something is wrong with my car."
"Traffic was horrendous yesterday."
"She has a lot of problems"
"That kid's behavior is atrocious."
"I hate doing the laundry."
(and on and on and on)

The pain of a starving child in Africa is no different than the pain of a child with leukemia born of wealthy American parents.
There's a distinction between pain and suffering. For everyone, pain is inevitable. But suffering is self-inflicted.
Most human misery is self-inflicted. Depression, anxiety and addiction are examples of how we cause our own suffering.
It's the origin of the phrase, "I'm my own worst enemy."

That baby starving in africa finds no benefit in their suffering because they cannot think about it. Brain function is compromised from malnutrition and there is also the issue of brain development due to age.

"In a nation that that was proud of hard work, strong families, close-knit communities and our faith in God, too many of us now tend to worship self-indulgence and consumption. Human identity is no longer defined by what one does, but by what one owns. But we've discovered that owning things and consuming things does not satisfy our longing for meaning. We've learned that piling up material goods cannot fill the emptiness of lives which have no confidence or purpose." --Jimmy Carter

Metamorphose. An object is cut off from its name, habits, associations. Detached, it becomes only the thing, in and of itself. When this disintegration into pure existence is at last achieved, the object is free to become endlessly anything. --Jim Morrison, The Lords and the New Creatures

Man is free, this is certainly the substantial nature of man; and not only is this liberty not relinquished in the state, but it is actually in the state that it is first realised. The freedom of nature, the gift of freedom, is not anything real; for the state is the first realisation of freedom. -G.F.W Hegal
