According to his bodyguard Crook, Abraham Lincoln dreamed about being assassinated 3 nights in a row. Crook told him to stay home that night, but he left and said "Goodbye, Crook." It was the first time he ever told Crook goodbye instead of goodnight.

Just as pearl-divers, tying stones to their waists and sinking down, pick up pearls that are found at the bottom of the ocean, so each one, sinking deep within oneself with ‘vairāgya’ (non-attachment), may obtain the pearl of oneself (`ātmā’). (From Bhagavān Śrī Ramaṇa’s ‘Nāṉ Ār?’: Par. 11)

“The world is so unhappy because it is ignorant of the true Self. Man’s real nature is happiness. Happiness is inborn in the true Self. Man’s search for happiness is an unconscious search for his true Self. The true Self is imperishable; therefore, when a man finds it, he finds a happiness which does not come to an end.” – Ramana Maharshi

“How does it help... to make misfortune heavier by complaining about it? This is more fit for a king—to seize your adversities head on. The more precarious his situation, the more imminent his fall from power, the more firmly he should be resolved to stand and fight.” - Seneca, Oedipus 80

I find this to be interesting and thoughtful. I'm far from a "king" but it still has meaning. Resolve and resilience come up a lot in my own "fight" with hard times. I do think complaining has a genuine place and situation in life and if you don't you're just allowing yourself defeat, or at least to acquiesce. Stoic philosophers generally have a lot of solid advice when it comes to hardship though regarding strength and all. I think a good balance of either fighting "back," and fighting "yourself," to be the thing that needs consideration.

Friedrich Nietzsche
"If you have an apple, and I have an apple, and we exchange these apples, then you and I will still each have one apple. But if you have an idea, and I have an idea, and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas." - George Bernard Shaw
"The mind likes a strange idea as little as the body likes a strange protein, and resists it with similar energy. It would perhaps not be too fanciful to say that a new idea is the most quickly acting antigen known to science. If we watch ourselves honestly, we shall often find that we have begun to argue against a new idea even before it has been completely stated." - most often attributed to either William Beveridge or Wilfred Trotter
"Thou mayest extract an antidote out of a viper, and good out of an enemy. An enemy will tell thee more truly of thy imperfections than the best of friends will adventure to do, or that we ourselves would be able to discern. And this may be applied as precious balm, to heal the wounds our folly or oversight have given our reputation, by guarding our actions for the future - which is far better than to be flattered into pride and carelessness." - Thomas Fuller
"Every time you learn something, you learn because something you did, didn't work. And that exposes you to the part of the world that you don't understand. Every time you're exposed to the part of the world that you don't understand, you have the possibility of rebuilding the structures you use to interpret the world. That's often why it's more important to notice that you're wrong than it is to prove that you're right. One of the things you're supposed to learn in university is precisely that. It might be useful to listen to people that annoy you, on the off chance that they know something that, if they tell you, you can use instead of dying. Talking to people who agree with what you say, is like walking around in a desert. You already know everything that they say. The reason you're associating with them in that situation is so they never say anything that challenges you - because you're afraid that if you go outside of what you understand, you won't be able to tolerate the chaos. But, it isn't the case. People have an unbelievable capacity to face and overcome things they don't understand. And not only that, but that is essentially what gives life its meaning." - Jordan Peterson

Later on you find out that that's nonsense, that there are no normal people. There are only patients. Some patients are able to stay upright at the expense of other patients and therefore we do not call them patients. We call them successful." - Arnon Grunberg, Grunberg Around The World
