When you throw trash on the ground, you apparently don't see yourself as truly belonging to the world that you're walking in.

"As soon as I was outside our white civilization, I saw what Europeans are like. We look awful. The Chinese call us devils and it is true, thin cruel lips, and our wrinkles are uncanny. And we are always intent on something no devil can understand. What are we seeking? Why the devil should we be seeking at all? The missionaries told me how they shoot antelopes from their bedroom windows, and how they cheat the British Government for a game license. They complain of their lot, when actually there is nothing more interesting than life among the primitive tribes. Rockefeller has given a great deal of money to the missions, but the people of the countryside say, "Don't employ a boy trained in the missions - they all lie and steal." - C. Jung

People seem good while they are oppressed, but they only wish to become oppressors in their turn: life is nothing but a competition to be the criminal rather than the victim.

Bertrand Russell

"It is true that I am not one of those who laugh at utopias. The utopia of today can become the reality of tomorrow. Utopias are conceived by optimistic logic which regards constant social and political progress as the ultimate goal of human endeavor; pessimism would plunge a hopeless mankind into a fresh cataclysm"
Charles Albert Gobat

I've been pretty down lately to the point of feeling misanthropic at times, but my slightly more positive side thinks this is a false dichotomy.  Maybe I just hope it is though

The line between 'normal' and 'neurotic' begins to appear when any activity becomes compulsive - that is, when the person feels pushed to perform the act because it habitually allays his anxiety rather than because of any intrinsic wish to perform the act.

Rollo May (The Meaning of Anxiety)

"The only thing that keeps me going is anger. I don't have any love in me at all. I hate community. Two things make me furious. Spiritualism, and community. People who talk about community want to manage other people. I grew up in a village. And people say that's a community, but it isn't. It's a lot of individuals, following the rules. And spiritualism, spiritual people are often very greedy, avaricious, and waste a hell of a lot of time. Nobody deserves what they are promised by spiritual people. And some people promise them eternal life. I think it's a horrific punishment to get eternal life, just ordinary people should never have such punishment visited on them." - Bill Mollison
