Interesting first post, welcome!

Ah  my dog of like 16-17 years passed away in December.  I miss him every day.  Can't get a new one anytime soon but when I get my life more in order a few years down the road I want to adopt a dog

This may have been posted in this huge thread before but I found it in one of my college (social psych) textbooks and thought it was kind of interesting: "No man, for any considerable period, can wear one face to himself and another to the multitude without finally getting bewildered as to which may be true." -Nathaniel Hawthorne, 1850

K I haven't thought of the perfect way to word this yet but I came up with it many months ago when I watched people around me slacking and I had to pick up the load for them.  "If you're not gonna full-ass it, why even half-ass it at all?" -me (2016)

It's more difficult to criticize someone who half-asses it than someone who does nothing.

Some of my coworkers are "sprinklers". Employees who sprinkle 2 hours of work over an 8 hour day.

Instead of getting 2 hours of work done by 10 AM, they sprinkle it over the day and finish at 4 PM.

Slackers have a strategy. Evolution = get as much $ (resources) for minimal work (effort).

Someone should write a book about the highly developed strategies of slackers.

Yea, that's what sucks about it.  They do just enough to get by, and a lot of the times they get treated the same as the people who do work hard.  Hate to sound like a dick but if they aren't being punished I feel like I should be rewarded

I love the idea of the book though  "Slacking for Dummies: how to get by doing just enough" or "How the evolution of the slacker managed to keep their gene-pool in our society."  K sorry those aren't great book titles lol I'm just having fun.

:peace:

I saw a video where he admitted to trying them.  A few months ago I was just going through a bunch of YouTube vids of him talking about random stuff; seems like a pretty interesting guy.  Kinda has a compassionate yet no-bullshit approach to life.

I went with my mom to a bookstore over the weekend cuz she wanted me to get something interesting to read since I'm on vacation this week.  I didn't see much in the science section that interested me, so I checked out the philosophy section, and was considering getting something like Plato, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, James, etc (although some of that stuff goes over my head at times, lol) but I figured I'm nihilistic enough and don't want to scare her Christian sensibilities even more, so I bought the Tao Te Ching.  Might have to ease my way into some of that other stuff, but in the meantime I think this should be a pretty interesting read   I'll post some hidden nuggets here if anything strikes me

Thanks for this, hadn't listened to that song in like 10 years.  "Give away the stone, let the waters kiss and transmutate..."

Also listened to Rosetta Stoned a few weeks ago for the first time in years too.  "But I forgot my pen!"   I had this one sorta loony trip one time where I got some grandiose delusions and felt like this, it makes me think maybe Maynard has been there before himself and knows this feeling, and also knows it's dumb, but it's funny as shit, and maybe that deep truth you may feel like you're receiving is to allow you to write a badass song, if that makes sense.  Funny for me to think about haha.

Shit guys I had a good Einstein quote from a few days ago but I forgot.  Posting in an effort to remind myself.  Hold me accountable it's really good.  And it's actually not an official quote but a joke quote that I made up, but something Einstein probably thought to himself at some point.  Part of the joke is that apparently people attribute a lot of random quotes to him.  But I came up with it watching a documentary about him so he can have the credit.  Ughhhh what was it!?!

"... All this was inspired by the principle—which is quite true within itself—that in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods.

It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying."

Mein Kampf - Hitler

I remember always thinking something like this seemed true but had never heard a "name" for it before.  Then I saw it was an idea of none other than Hitler.  Especially with the political climate of today... we should remember not to be suckers :tongue2:

Is this some small "universal karma" typa idea?  Cuz I've posited that position before  :cool2:  I'm also drunk and don't care to expand at the moment but I think I've gone down that similar line before and umm, ehemm, I agree?  More later; maybe.

@ Shakedown Street - (btw that particular song and album have been on my mind more than usual lately lol, anyway) gotta have the picture!  I thought originally the pale blue dot was simply taken from the moon I may need to do more research on that, or maybe it was at first, then they got another pic from even further away.  This is the pic from Voyager as it passed Saturn I believe so from way out there (Saturn is 9.5 AU's from the sun, so 9.5x further away from the sun than we are [or 8.5 additions... whatever])

All that humanity has ever known and all life as we know it that has ever lived (and all consciousness itself as far as we know) has all existed on that tiny speck   And that's still a pic from within our solar system lol; the universe is astronomically larger

Right on, yea "universal karma" is sort of the name I've personally given to that idea although it may be more broad than that, I like the "collective un/conscious" and stuff too.  Maybe my interpretation is slightly different but I think of a kind of butterfly effect, or even "sin" - akin to karma... in a more broad/universal way and not about just one person, but the greater interactions of how karma/sin/any action basically can influence another person, and so on and so on.  Good tends to beget good (overall) and vice versa.

What does happen is that its opponents gradually die out, and that the growing generation is familiarized with the ideas from the beginning: another instance of the fact that the future lies with the youth."

-Max Planck

There's a common paraphrase of this: "Science progresses one funeral at a time"

I'd kind of like to think psychedelics offer some chance of letting our weak, limited selves die and a better self emerge.

What's interesting about this quote is I don't think it necessarily applies to just science in my opinion.  I feel like major changes in society and the sort of "zeitgeist" as it applies to topical issues also may be spurred on by older generations dying out and newer ones coming into their own.  Granted I do think in a general sense these sort of "culture wars" have been going on for decades and some of the issues are similar, but I feel like they're at least changing a bit - slow as it may be.

Change in any capacity always seems to take time (often a lot).  To your point about psychedelics I'd agree they can be a catalyst for change in a more rapid way, but it's obviously not guaranteed and requires work outside of just tripping   They may help guide you along and show you "a" way, or at least where you're headed in the wrong direction, but it's up to the individual to follow the path in their revelation.  The trip is a ride but once the ride stops you gotta hoof it to make the real changes.

Also I'm just gonna post the most cliché adage of all time because it feels relevant here and while it's said all the time I think the meaning is even more profound than people realize: "Rome wasn't built in a day."  Revolutionary, I know   But really, as I embark on my own life changes and my desire to become a writer and buy a house and as the daily stresses start to mount or I don't believe I can do it, I think remembering that ALL great things had humble beginnings is very important on both a personal and societal level.

I find this to be interesting and thoughtful.  I'm far from a "king" but it still has meaning.  Resolve and resilience come up a lot in my own "fight" with hard times.  I do think complaining has a genuine place and situation in life and if you don't you're just allowing yourself defeat, or at least to acquiesce.  Stoic philosophers generally have a lot of solid advice when it comes to hardship though regarding strength and all.  I think a good balance of either fighting "back," and fighting "yourself," to be the thing that needs consideration.

I trend towards feeling like a philosophical pessimist a lot of the time, and don't necessarily have the highest amounts of faith in humanity, but I still WANT what's best for humanity, and have some hope.  I then got confused about cynicism for a minute and needed to look up the definitions quick and saw the "glass half empty or full" thing.  Then the thought popped into my head "I am an optimistic pessimist."  I am pessimistic, but cling on to hope for the Human Fucking Spirit.  I don't know if that's mutually exclusive or not.

Then I thought "I believe the glass is one quarter full."  I thought that was funny :tongue2:

I also like the kinda stoic, science-y sounding "it is at the 50% mark."

I picked that book up recently, probably because as far as I'm aware it's a cautionary tale as to what I feel myself becoming sometimes, or almost desire.  Also nice to mix things up.  Grabbed a few other existentialist books too but I've just kinda briefly read the intros so far and I'm not sure which one to start with.  I heard the Brothers Karamazov is also (another) good one by Dostoyevsky; just wondering what some of your top choices by him would be?

I've binged like 10 movies in the last few days but the most recent was rewatching Memento and paying attention to a lot of the themes regarding meaning and purpose, which is obviously an incurable itch that I can't scratch satiating-ly.

There were a lot of good quotes in there, but here's a few for starters.  First one for comedy "OK what am I doing -- oh, I'm chasing this guy" *gets shot at* "Nope, he's chasing me."

"You don't want the truth. You make up your own truth." -Teddy
"We all lie to ourselves to be happy." -Leonard

"I have to believe in a world outside my own mind. I have to believe that my actions still have meaning, even if I can't remember them. I have to believe that when my eyes are closed, the world's still there. Do I believe the world's still there? Is it still out there?... Yeah. We all need mirrors to remind ourselves who we are. I'm no different." -Leonard again

Also Roy's final line in Blade Runner just cuz it's so good "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe --- All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.  Time to die."
