Clones and Early Sexing
    #10249371 - 04/28/09 01:06 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

I've read that you can put a garbage bag over the lower branch of your plants on a 12/12 cycle for about a month to get an early identification on the plant's gender if they're growing outdoors. This seems to be a very time consuming process though. I was wondering if it was more practical to just clone the plants when they have 4 sets of true leaves and then get the clones rooted and transferred into soil. Then switch the clones to a flowering cycle so that you can identify the clones gender thus identifying the outdoor plant's gender as well. Would this method allow an early identification or would it take just as long to complete this process as it would for an outdoor plant to naturally reveal it's gender. Basically I don't know how long it would take to root some clones and get them to indicate gender. For all I know, it could take longer to do this than it would for the outdoor plants to naturally reveal their genders. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I have not tried covering a branch for 12/12 to sex plants.  I find it easier to look for preflowers which are usually seen from the 6th node and above.  One can get pretty good with a magnifying glass.  But cloning is also a good way, most root in a week then 2 weeks of 12 12 for your mamas to show.
good luck!

you can cover a branch for 12/12 a day and sex that way, but it is time consuming and a pain in the ass to do, as you say.

your method is sound.
i would let them get a little bigger before cloning though, however if you clone when they have 4 sets of leaves this will do no harm.
rooting your clones would take anywhere up to three weeks, perhaps a little faster depending on your method.
using an aeroponic propagator for example would give you rooted clones in 7 - 10 days.
you could have them on a 12/12 light cycle while the clones root anyway, to save time.
IME rooted clones will show sex during week 2 of being switched to 12/12, it may take a little longer if they are rooting during that time, no sure as i have never tried it.

They will show sex after 2 weeks even if they aren't well rooted.

Obviously 2 weeks is just the standard according to most. I have seen them earlier and later than that period. What strain(s) you use uare?
