will i die?
    #1025892 - 11/05/02 09:14 PM (21 years, 4 months ago)

I recently found mold in one of my B+ jars, the mold was 1/3 the size of a dime and has stopped growing, when the cake is fully colonized can i still grow and eat the fruits of my labor or should i just throw the cake out now? What about if i cut the mold out?

You're good, just don't eat shrooms from the cake if it is massively contaminated.

If it gets overly contaminated, you won't have any decent shrooms to worry about!

Some molds are very very toxic and its not recommended to eat any shrooms from a contaminated cake as it could get you very sick. Some people do take the risk but it's up to you to decide if the risk is worth it.

I think your best option would be to remove the mold with a sterile knife and just watch and see if it comes back. You might want to move that moldy cake out of the fruiting chamber tho

Cutting the moldy part off does not really reduce the risk. Mycellium is a living network, and toxins can be transfered from any point on the cake to the rest of the cake, and the shrooms.

What if the mushroom itself appears healthy and the mold is growing near the base, but not on the mushroom itself?

Still a risk. As I pointed out, the toxins can be transfered throughout the cake and into the mushrooms, no matter where they fruit from, through the mycellial network.

Try digging into the cake and you`ll most likely find the cake is infact green inside, more so than outside.

I have eaten mushrooms from contaminated substrates several times. I felt secure in the rational that it was infinitly more likely to be a harmless common bread mold than a deadly toxic mold. I did not die. Although some would call me a fool.

Does anybody have a link or something explaining the whole "Toxin transfer" thing that happens? If cubensis mycelium can transfer deadly chemicals from mold to mushrooms then that means its not safe to eat any wild mushroom at all because you never know, underground it might be transfering death cap chems into the mushrooms. I don't believe it myself.

Almost any mold or contamination you grow is a "common" one. The problem here is that you are producing a large concentration of the contamination which could prove quite problematic upon consumption.

Well, it's true. The mycelium network shares nutrients. It will not readily absorb anything, and will in fact neutralize many environmental toxins. However, many toxins are readily absorbed and transfered. I cannot direct you to a link but do some searching on your own. You may not find definitive info regarding the common common contams a cultivator faces with regard to "toxin transfer" rates, but hey, if you want to experiment with yourself feel free.
