misting/over watering?
    #10257324 - 04/29/09 07:38 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

Hi, all, I looked and couldn't find quite the answer I was looking for, and I apologize if this is a terribly redundant question, but if someone could please comment...
I birthed my cakes and dropped them into my FC about a week ago, after misting 4-6 times a day, the humidity guage I bought sort of filled up with water and doesn't seem to be reading correctly. I have some really nice fat, plump (bordering on the obscene) looking pins appearing on nearly all the cakes, but was wondering, there seems to be water pooling under the cake/on top of the mason jar lids to some degree. Is this potentially problematic?
The pins look really happy, which makes me believe I should not, but any experience with this backfiring is greatly appreciated. As always, thanks very much!

I understand getting the pins over-wet can encourage aborts. An important part of the process is the fanning, since the evaporation is also a fruiting trigger.  If they're pinning so good, you must be doing something right.

Water pooling underneath the cakes can cause shrooms to grow on the bottom of the cake that you might not notice and they could rot. It can also cause the cakes to produce fat shrooms that are waterlogged and with hollow stems like this one

I keep my cakes suspended in my shotgun FC. I took a couple coat hangers, straightened them out into a straight piece of wire and made "cake kebabs" and put the end of the wires through holes in the FC to keep the cakes off the surface. You could kinda see what I mean in this pic

i must say i'm a fan of the shroom-kebobs as well. Did you sterilize the coat hangers befor hand? Imagine the shrooms sprouting from all sides!

I didnt but probably should have. I didnt have any problems with contams or anything like that though....maybe I was just lucky. And yes...having the cakes suspended does provide for 360 degree shroomage...its awesome.

I like the "cake kebabs" idea, exposing more surface area of the substrate to FAE is ideal for getting that extra little bit from your cakes and substrates.

Watering is a very important part of the myc life. you don't want to have to much and not enough. there is a balance that you need to find that is right for you. This is just IMO.

if you wanted to really get into it, you could fit a ton of cakes into an fc that way! 4 cakes to a skewar, 3 skewars in a row stacked 3 high, 36 cakes! I wonder how well that would work!!

fat, overly plump pins like this? there are 4 pins directly under this one, and quite a few babies completely underneath the cake. also, did you make your kebabs from the get-go? or after they started pinning? any adverse effects on pins already underway?

I don't really see how they could hurt your cakes too much, just make sure you sterilize the skewars.

I guess you could say that it would open up the inside off the cake to outside contaminants, but fully colonized cakes should be pretty resistant to that.

That might just be a naturally fat shroomie u got there. I came up with the kebab idea when I noticed shrooms growing out from under the cakes and tilting them over. So yea...cakes had pins as well as some semi-mature shrooms on them. After they were skewered, everything continued to grow just the same as before and they continue to fruit and grow today so no, there wasnt any kind of adverse effects whatsoever.

Not a good start dude. You need to look bigger. Like starting with grain and than spawning to substarte. TRhan fruiting in a Martha chamber. The only way to go. IMO.

I may ka-bob the ones that are going a bit slower tomorrow, as for the fat plumper, I flipped it over and count 17 pins, so I am reluctant to mess with it, this being my first grow. I went ahead and flipped a few more that looked 'frisky'. Also, is an RH guage really necessary in people's opinions if one is usually around to mist? Are there any rules of thumb or intuitive methods people have aside from actually guaging the humidity? as always, thanks for the help

starrider, are you saing they should be bigger for the week in the fc by now? they took about 4-5 weeks to colonize too.
brandonb1369, no worries, I don't consider it a highjack, I appreciate your feedback.

I have a hygrometer inside of my FC but it rarely ever reads above 85 and I cant calibrate it so I think its just junk so I dont even pay attention to it anymore. I just mist thoroughly every 2 hours and it seems to work for me.

It does to up to a month to colonize with cakes. That is why I moved on to grain. I couldn't wait the month. I also find that fruiting from a substrate is a lot easier than from a cake. My set up isn't set for BRF cakes. I set it up to fruit by trays. You should really try it.
