Should pot smokers be able to adopt?

Shouldn't anybody wanting to adopt a kid be required to pass a drug test?

Nobody should ever be required to pass a drug test for anything.

Pretty dumb poll. Plenty of parents smoke pot, some of my friends smoke weed with their parents.

Unless somebody else's health or safety is at stake. (Pilots, surgeons, for example.)
Adoptive parents should be able to show a minimum amount of concern for the safety of their potential adoptees. Being a potsmoker in today's political climate, you risk jail by just being yourself.
Or myself. I toke up when I can get it. But there's no way I'd let somebody like me adopt a kid anyway.

Who gives a shit about today's political climate? What you like to do with your life is nobody's business but your own.
If you can perform your job satisfactorily, then it doesn't matter what drugs you may be using.

Until it affects somebody else. This is a fundamental element of the American system going all the way back to Thomas Jefferson.

I say yes, while it's still illegal. I'm not saying parents shouldn't smoke, but if you don't care enough to stop smoking for a month in order to pass a drug test, you shouldn't get to adopt a child.

Rastafarians let their 6 year old kids smoke, and it's not shit to them. It all depends on the culture, I guess, and IMO, a culture that demonizes cannabis is a stupid, shitty one.

This isn't about whether drug laws are good or sensible. It's about whether following the law is a valid criterion for screening adoptions.
Would you let a murderer adopt a child? A rapist? What about a child molester? (say he likes boys, but the adoptee is a girl.)
I started this thread just in fun, after gay adoption one. But if you look at the votes that have been cast, it seems that maybe it's a serious point.

The law should have absolutely nothing to do with it. Murder, rape, and child molestation is illegal for obvious, logical reasons. Cannabis, however, is not.

Seems like you don't get what I'm saying. Or you're trolling. Either way, it's cool- it's just a discussion.

I'm pretty sure you're saying it's a stupid useless law that isn't doing anything useful. Right?
Now, tell me what I'm saying, and we'll see who is paying attention to what.

"It's about whether following the law is a valid criterion for screening adoptions."
Either you agreed that following the law is a valid criterion or not; I'm not sure if you've taken a side yet, but it almost seems as if you agree.
