How much oxygen does mycelium in BRF cakes need?
    #10239837 - 04/26/09 10:29 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

I've already done two successful batches of BRF cakes using PF Tek.  However, I'm still wondering how much oxygen it takes to grow mycelium.  In an instructional video using rye grass seed, it says to leave the jar tops loose so air can get in.  Notably, all guides say to completely seal, cover jars using BRF cakes.  Is there enough air left in the sealed BRF jar for optimal mycelium growth?  Thanks again.

the inoculation holes in the lid will provide enough air exchange. screw the lid on all the way.

But, I thought you were supposed to seal the holes in the top of the jar with tape or aluminum foil so contaminants won't get in.  I don't see sealed holes allowing much air exchange...

That's for when you are pc'ing. I've heard of some leaving tape on as long as it is micropore tape, which will allow some gas exchange.

the BRF, you leave holes untaped. This will allow for gas exchange. If you have the top verm layer, you cakes will be fairly safe. With grains you don't have a barrier, that why you use micropore tape of a filter of some sort.

Wow, that is news to me.  I could swear that the videos and/or tek I read for BRF cakes said to put foil over the top during the whole mycelium growth stage.

Just to make sure I'm understanding correctly... After they are out of the pressure cooker and inoculated: as long as the layer of dry vermiculite is on top, I do not need to cover the holes with tin foil or tape.

...This could explain my abnormally slow mycelium growth before.  However, it did eventually colonize the jars.

Hmmm... based on other threads I've started with relatively "obvious" questions leads me to think that the set of videos I initially went off of it outdated.

The "Magic Mushroom Growing Made Easy Videos" 1-7 say to replace the foil on the lid (in addition to the dry vermiculite barrier.  Notably, they also say to use less water (3 verm to 1 water).  I'm assuming some water evaporation also happens through the holes.

However, the mushroomvideos.com instructions are in line w/ what you're saying:

Would you agree that the first set of videos is outdated?  I'm pissed off I followed the first set now...

I didn't watch the first video, but I will vouch for the mushroomvideos.com videos. Let's Grow Mushrooms is the shit.

I made a BRF jar and it has no lid and is growing fine  What a protective verm layer it is.. Its just an experiment here is a old pic of it..

Now its about 70 percent done..

Nvm the date lol..

Yea, I first came across that "Magic Mushroom Growing Made Easy" video initially as well. I later learned it contains a lot outdated information. I just disregard it completely and following more proven methods like RR's mushroomvideos.com. Reading the thread in my sig and searching the forums (check the "trusted cultivator" and limit to past 3 years) has helped me a lot. Most question I've thought of so far have already been answered on these forums, there is so much info here!

:bow2: Everything you say in this post is perfect. Five shrooms for you :mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2:

If only everyone had as much sense as you.

You've basically described two excellent nub tips:

1. Watch the free BRF tek videos from Let's Grow Mushrooms. Treat these videos as your primary reference, and follow them as closely as possible. Buy Let's Grow Mushrooms if you can afford it and are truly interested in mycology.

2. Search for posts by Trusted Cultivators and be careful when reading any posts that are over three years old or so. Much of what was accepted back then has been trumped by new techniques.

Great, thanks for the advice.  I will completely disregard the first set of videos.  I have to say though, I did find their general filming style more entertaining that RR's...

That's true! It is kinda a fun movie to watch. Lots of good shroom shots.
