Schizophrenia
    #10202125 - 04/20/09 02:55 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

i saw these videos a year ago in my psychology class. even though i've seen them over and over again, they're just still so amazingly interesting to me. i figured i'd share them with you guys and hopefully you will feel the same way. psychology is such an interesting topic, and i just wanted to share these videos with you.

all i know is that apparently they are called "a case study in schizophrenia" and it documents 2 separate patients: gerald and heather. i knew schizophrenia was a very serious condition, but just seeing it play out on film like this makes it so much more intriguing to me how the brain works.

well, enjoy, and tell me what you think!

what intrigues me immensely is not exactly the things he (Gerald) says, but how he structures his sentences and words and his thoughts. example being in video #1, almost immediately, he speaks of being electrocuted for "all the sins he's been in". or later, he describes a portrait on the wall having a headache. weird stuff. try and even logically reason your way out of that or even through it and it's difficult. i'm sure nobody really understands but them; to them, maybe this all makes sense.

I think it's really interesting what Gerald says, maybe a combination of metaphors, non-sense, and some coherent speaking.  Reminds me of an a autistic (Stephen) I used to work with and it's impossible to know what they are thinking when saying certain words, but I'm sure that he did.  It's hard to pin it down with Gerald but observing his behaviors and speech over a period of time would be interesting and make it a lot more understandable although still confusing.  How the mind works is such a deep mystery in many ways.

All that fidgeting is from the akathisia caused by the haloperidol.  He's been prescribed benztropine to lessen that side-effect, but it's still coming through powerfully.  I'd be interested in seeing what he was like before treatment.
