It doesn't offend me or anything: I'm not gay, and I'm sure most gay people have thick enough skins with all the BS they put up with. But I still think the negative use of words like 'gay' and 'fag' contributes to a subconscious fear and hatred of homosexuals.

I totally agree. I wouldn't like it if people started using "left-handed" to mean "bad". Even if they didn't actually have any problem with left-handed people, that connection is still being made.
