Habitat: Growing on? and around a tree stump. Patches with big mushrooms growing, biggest being up to 20 cm in diameter.
Bruising: Seemed to bruise a brown colour, see pics.

Cheers, Swish

wow, weird, the gills and veil dont match up but it looks alot like both Gymnopilus and Cortinarius, probably something entirely different than either of those though!

If the spores are white to cream, Tricholomopsis. If the spores are rusty, Gymnopilus.

I think the spores are a dark tan color, they are covering the veil.
I am going to guess wrong and say Pholiota.

The spore print looks rusty, so I guess it's Gymnopilus? Are they active? Would the spore print be needed, can upload a photo later tonight!

The gills seem off for that, too close togeather and not yellow enough. Taste a little and spit it out, is it bitter?
Can you take a couple more macro shots of it?
Also leave the cap to print on some white paper or tinfoil.

The spores look like a not-so-orange rusty colour, but still more orange than light or chocolate brown. Certainly more orange than what I would expect from Pholiota, but not a bad guess. The spores and gills are a bit light for Gymnopilus, but I think that's what it is.

Are you sure they were growing directly from the stump? You seem a little unsure..

Here is the spore print I took, got smudged a bit.
The taste is bitter.
I think that one patch was growing right out of the tree stump, and another right near it in the ground. It was just walking my dog so didn't have a camera and didn't pay close attention.
Hope these macro's help identify exactly whether these are edible and active? I'll try to post some pics of the habitat tomorrow if need be.

No definitely not edible or active, possibly poisonous..
I would call it a Cortinarius if it was growing on the ground, not out of the log.
There's only one mushroom you are looking for that is active: Psilocybe subaeruginosa. Its cap is caramel coloured, it has a pure white stem, it has blue marks that become obvious when you bruise it and it has a purple/dark brown spore print. It grows from woodchips and will never (99% of the time) grow out of the side of a tree or a rotting log.
That's the ONLY active mushroom you'll be able to find in Melbourne.

Really? That's the only active?? No active Panaeolus or Gymnopilus?
abrsoc, That's a strange one! It doesn't look like Gymnopilus anymore! Hmmm, the spores are still on the rusty side for Pholiota, gills are wrong for Galerina, it kind of looks like Agrocybe, but again the spores are more rusty than any of the species I am familiar with. At this point Pholiota and Agrocybe are probably the best guesses, and maybe this just has unusually rusty spores... Or perhaps it is something else altogether.
