Agar substitute
    #10199811 - 04/20/09 05:41 AM (14 years, 11 months ago)

i have prints that may not be exactly clean.  they are fairly good though, and i want to culture them without comtaminates.

the problem is i do not have access to agar at the moment.

If i made a pulp with cardboard at the right water content, and a small bit of flour to help germinate the spores could i successfully transfer away from contams?

If not, how could i germinate my spores and transfer away from contams without agar?  i do not need to isolate a strain.

Thanks

You will probably have limited success trying to germinate on cardboard.

Why can you not just order some agar?

I have tried a lot of agar substitutes but have not had a single one work for me.  You are always welcome to try your self but from my experience nothing takes the place of real agar.

On that note, Every Chinese supermarket I have been in carries agar-agar for around 1$ an oz. It is food grade but works fine for mushrooms. If you have a local Chinese Market start there and don't be afraid to ask the guy that runs the place, if he does not carry it he can tell you where to find it.

yeah, ill get agar soon.  i was just thinking i can start right away if i could mix carboard pulp and a bit of flour (of some sort)

i have seen seen beer soaked cardboard.  i could do that.  http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/742923#742923

i was thinking if i mixed a little bit of flour in it would have enough nutes to germinate and grow out so i can transfer.  as long as i didn't use a solid piece of carboard it should be easy to cut a little piece out.

do you think either will work?  i already know agar is better.

EDIT: ill try a couple variations tomorrow too, but i want to hear some suggestions.

What I heard was that this tek is good for propagating mycelium but not germinating spores.  But hey, if you don't have any better ideas, it might be an interesting experiment.  If you get it to work, let us know.

well i made 1 with flour, 1 with sugar and 5 with beer.  one collaped haha.  i did them in gladware 1/4 pints, microwave sterilization.

we'll see how these work out, i also used paper towel instead of cardboard cuz it was faster.  ill throw some spores in later today.

Just work with agar. Don't substitute. Once I started working with agar I never used anything else. It's surprisingly easy, too, once you get used to it.
