Acid Pro v3.0 FruityLoops v3.4 or Sonic Foundry Sound Forge v6.0A
i don't really know which one is better than the others. i currently have acid pro 3.0, which is quite good, but i'm not sure if one of the others is superior.
and if there's a program that is better, but isn't one of those three... tell me!
much thanks

Get all of them and see what you prefer. Soundforge is for editing and sampling rather than sequencing like Acid and Fruity, so you want that no matter what. As for Acid vs Fruity it's really up to the user I think. They're both capable of making quality tracks. Acid's sequencing may be simpler to figure out if you've never done it before but Fruity is by no means hard or very complicated to learn.
As for samples don't think you're stuck with what the programs give you. Hit up google for 'free wav samples' and you'll find all sorts of beats and crazy shit. Download some softwear synthesizers and you're in tweaking heaven!

Definately Reason 2.0, and maybe also cubase SX because it supports VST plugins. It might be good to start out on Fruity Loops though.

Fruityloops also supports VST plug-ins and DirectX plug-ins, and, IMHO, is much easier to use then both Reason and Cubase.

how about an old-school tracker like renoise??
i used to be a frenetic fasttracker2 user (+sound forge and goldwave for sample editing). now, after five years or so, i decided to start performing this noble activity again and discovered that times have changed a bit.. ft2 doesn't run on any os since win98. on unitedtrackers.com, i learnt that renoise should be today's equivalent of ft2, downloaded the bastard and found that it runs in 1024*768, which is unfortunately too high a resolution for my monitor (old school as well). ((unexpected catch indeed, gotta buy a new monitor anyway))
so much for my heartbreaking life story..
sound forge is without any doubt a powerful tool, but i miss the simple static/dynamic bandpass/bandstop, like in goldwave
and i can't stand fruityloops' interface.. can't imagine creating music with something looking like THAT (i guess i'm a bit prejudiced here)
looking forward to feedback from you fellow musicians..

oh and LoopTheorist, i would love to incorporate your sick samples into one of my future* sonic emanations.. you can be sure i'll let you hear them as soon as they're done..
*(please notice that your total post count is 6 times higher than mine, although i'm registered one year before you. this fact reveals that i'm a lazy shit and getting anything done always takes such a looong time to me) not exactly imminent future, i mean
(to myself) cut that shit will you
