A new swine flu strain that has killed as many as 68 people and sickened more than 1,000 across Mexico has “pandemic potential,” the World Health Organization chief said Saturday, and it may be too late to contain the sudden outbreak.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has stepped up surveillance across the United States. "We are worried," said the CDC's Dr. Anne Schuchat.

“We don’t think we can contain the spread of this virus,” said Schuchat, Interim Deputy Director for Science and Public Health Program. “We are likely to find it in many other places.”

One of my buddies who is a big time conspiracy theorist tells me that the gov't is currently producing avian flu en masses and shipping it all over the US (via police escorted tractor trailers) to release upon the citizens, and that certain train yards are already starting to stockpile empty train cars to transport the infected to the "sick camps".

Actually, there is reason to be worried about this one. H5N1 (Bird Flu) was only capable of bird-to-human transmission. H1N1 (Swine Flu) is capable of both swine-to-human and human-to-human.

I wasn't worried too badly about Bird Flu, but this one is actually pretty damn scary. Especially because it's so close to home.
