Can you use BRF cakes for mexicana (strain A) if you want them to fruit? Or is it better to just case?

Thanks for the feedback. I had no idea it would possibly take a 2 week soak! I have read the info on mushmush's site but thanks for the link.

i don't know if it will fruit from BRF cakes. But anyways, a good coldshock seems necessary. The best fruiting trays i had were fruited after a cold period of 4 weeks. Millet and grass seed are proven to support fruitings like these.

Just cased substrate no sclerotia. After colonisation of the casing layer the trays were chilled for 4 weeks.

Mexicana sclerotia form well on/in BRF cakes. But so far I have not seen a decent fruiting on that substrate.
But of tampanensis (a close relative of mexicana) I know that it produces the largest mushrooms on a mixture of chopped wheatstraw and brown rice.
For some reason all mushrooms which can be grown on spawned straw also produce the biggest specimens on that substrate. (unfortunately, the general picture is that the bigger the mushroom the lower the potency or, in the case of oysters, taste).
For a nice flush of as-large-as-possible mexicana's my bet is on spawned wheatstraw. But I have not not tried it out yet...

When cold shocking a casing do you just put it in the fridge and leave it there for a month? Then go and put it in your fruiting chamber?

is the quality of the flush proportional to the length of the coldshock? what would you say the minimum effective coldshock is? I've got a mex-A casing that's been in the fridge for I forget how long, about a week anyway, and I'm getting all im-paa-ti-ennnt!
