recycle perlite?
    #1022678 - 11/05/02 12:18 AM (14 years, 6 months ago)

well, can ya? i got a good fruiting chamber built and im too lazy to make a new one and go out and get new perlite. would it be bad to use the same setup for new cakes? i would probably just add more water to it. i was thinking that it could possibly increase my chances of contams, but just wondering if anyone else reuses perlite....

I rarely toss out perlite, I just add more as the old stuff dissolves. I also use a lot of h202.

I baked some in the oven for 30 min @ 300 degrees. The casings that are in the terrarium with the recycled perlite are doing fine.

It prolly would increase chances of contams, but if you pour some h202 into it, it should cut down that chance. Why dont you oven sterelize the perlite, wipe down the inside of the chamber with a bleach water solution and then start over? You dont have to get anything new, but you do have to do some work.

Is there a problem with spraying the perlite occasionally with a mild(1:100 to 1:200) bleach solution?

I have 2 bags of that but perlite isnt free. probably 50 cents worth of it per container. Ill clean out the container once my cakes finish flusing but I could also sterilize the perlite. how does putting it in a PC and cook without pressure, just long enough to kill most bateria so there wont be much left, since the air isnt sterile anyway
