Pinning before birthing, what to do? (PICS)
    #10220783 - 04/23/09 03:53 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

So my last two jars are starting to pin without being completely colonized yet. Should I wait a few more days and see if it colonizes while letting the pins grow a little bit, or is that a bad idea. I've been under the impression that if pinning starts, the cakes should be birthed.

Here you can see a couple pins - kinda hard to see because of the glass.

Here's the other jar where there are a shitton of the pins popping up.

Here's how much they have left to colonize..

Any advise?

If I were you I'd wait a few days and see if the the rest colonizes. If it doesn't end up colonizing it probably wasn't meant to colonize. Just remove the uncolonized part with a sharp, sterilized knife and dunk. You can dunk cakes that have already started to pin, just be careful not to harm your potential fruits.

Good luck

Next time, don't turn them upside down. How long have they been like that?

Flipping jars has worked for a lot of people with stalled jars or jars that have that little extra left to colonize.

Yeah, my last two cakes started pinning way early from being fully colonized, so I did the cutting method. How long can the cakes stay in the jar while they're pinning?

They've been that way for about 2 weeks. They stalled at about 50% and this made their growth explode again.

Thanks for the comment on my sketch. It's a prototype for a huge self portrait that I'm going to make and get framed. If you'd really like a drawing, throw me some ideas and if I have some spare time I'll run with it and maybe pump something out for you.

Here's some much older stuff i happen to have on the net for me to shamelessly display:

My first self portrait:

I haven't actually come across that problem yet, but I'd imagine not very long- unless you plan to fruit them invitro (in the jar).

Dude, you're really talented by the way. Sick drawings. What kinda axe you got?

When I posted on this previously, I got no response within 24 hours.  At that time, I bumped, and received a single response to wait for full colonization.

I waited, and eventually all of them birthed successfully, although three of them took a week longer.  YMMV.

So general consensus is to let them colonize longer before birthing them?

Yes, unless the pins start to rot

BTW, the pinning was probably caused by you flipping the jars over. The top of the jar was presented with high humidity and caused the jars to initiate pinning
