Two questions...
    #1022432 - 11/04/02 10:42 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

1) I was sterilizing my jars (by steaming, I don't have a pressure cooker) and after they were done, there was a white film/residue around the sides and bottom of the pot. What is this and how can I prevent this?

2) It's my understanding that mycellium should colonize in darkness. Would a black light bulb have any positive or negative effects on colonization when used as a heater?

1) I think someone on here once said to put vinegar in the water before you boil, but it may have been something different.

2) I'm not sure if a black light would effect it either way, but why not just use a fish tank heater for heat? It won't dry out your jars, and it doesn't have a detrimental effect on the mycelium, which the black light may. Good luck

I can't find a fish tank heater that can be completely submerged in water (the gap between my tubs is only big enough for the cord). Are there any other alternatives to heat it?

You don't need a completely submersable fish tank heater, just a jar and a 50 watt clip on heater (i got mine for $10 at PetCo)

heres a pic of my setup:

Temp stays steady at 85-86 degrees

Thanks BitchCakes, that is the most helpful post so far.  I'll do that, I was wondering how to get it in water when I can't submerge the whole thing.  I'll go out and grab one of those heaters (my other one broke, spilled water on it when it was hot, bad idea  and hopefully will be going in no time   You have the same tub and heater as me too hehe.

i believe the residue is the mineral deposits from hard water. if you got your water from the tap that's probably what it is... just my two cents......do i get change back?

The above is just an illusion.
