How do I safely get rid of leaking propane tank?
    #10222868 - 04/23/09 09:29 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

There's a spare tank here that I hooked up the other day, but it reeked like propane when it was on - from underneath where the tank is stored.  I don't use it at the moment, this bugged me out - I got another fresh tank for now

How does one get rid of a full propane tank that may have a slow leak?

if it may have a slow leak, immerse it in a plastic tub or trash can full of water and check for bubbling.

most likely it's the valve or the connection of the hose. if it's leaking, you'd do best to take it into an open area and slowly and carefully open it up and let it run dry. it's polluting i know, but a damned site better than an explosion transporting a leaky dank for disposal.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Yeah, since other tanks don't have the scent issue, I'm thinking it's this tank

Good idea  ....

Propane will evaporate and dissipate very quickly once it is not under pressure. Just place it outside somewhere and it should be fine.

And here is something some of you may not know....Propane it self actually does not have much of a smell, so before it comes into the hand of consumers it is treated with an "odorant". That way if there is a leak we can smell it...

Drive it out to a field, cover the said tank in planks of dry wood. Douse with everything kerosene. Flick a lit cigarette into the pile of wood. Run to your car, drive about 500 yards away and wait for the fun.
