Greetings Mush-Heads!
I've been lingering about for a year now, and finally jumped in.
Now, i just need some reassurance that i'm getting optimum results.
The 1 Pint Cakes:
- Hawaiian Spore Syringe (big ups to Ralph!)
- BRF Cakes noc'd up 3/21
- Birthday 4/20
- Dunk & Roll (Vermiculite)
The Chamber:
- 27qt Clear Box
- Weather Seal
- 3" Perlite
- 2 Vases w/ AirStones
- 5-15 gal Air Pump
- Timex Hygrometer
- 4 1" holes (2 plugged 2 stuffed with Poly-Fil)
- Several 1/8" holes drilled below Perlite level
- 1 Energy Saver DAYLIGHT fluorescent bulb
I began with the Perlite and 4 holes stuffed with polyfil.
Disappointed with <50% humidity by the next day, i added the airpump action, weather seal, and plugged 2 holes.
I fan twice a day and mist every other. I will add an analog hygrometer tomorrow.
Colleagues, you are looking at 3.5 days in the fruiting chamber.
Please tell me, is the patient going to make it?

not at all. just a mist of condensation on the chamber ceiling.
i read threads recommending the eyeball to the hygrometer.
i haven't established a good third eye yet. so..
i'd like to know if at this stage, the development is normal.
i don't want to end up delivering a stillborn baby.

Yeah it looks good so far- just try to get that humidity up for your soon to be pinsets.

I disagree, 3" should suffice. Although it could help, IMO it's not the root of the problem.

so the cakes look good. alright.
no pins yet, but hopefully they're in the mail.
now this humidity problem.
FC averages at 78 degrees. should i try getting it down to 74?
I can add 3" of perlite, but i'd rather avoid handling ze cakes.
Too much FAE with the Air Pump and Poly-Fil?

i haven't been blessed with children yet, but i'm feeling like a dad.
i'm checking in on these jokers. turning their light off at bedtime.
taking their temperature. they're all i think about. it's exciting.

i put an analog thermometer/hygrometer in the FC.
within an hour, humidity was at 95%.
unless i got burned, digital is shiiiiiiit!

Those digi hygometers are shit. I had the same prob when I first started. I found an analog for like 2 bucks and I"ve been good the whole time.

NEVER enough FAE!!
mushrooms grow best with like 4-5 FAE an hour.
the only problem with increased FAE is your cakes can dry out.
actually air is one of the major pinning triggers and helps prevent contams.

True Dat. I've been trying that straw in the cake with water. Straw Tek I think it's called. Solves that problem quite nicely. I am not disapointed with results.

Yes, both of those look it up it's the Straw Tek. It is simple it is just a reservoir of water for your cake to drink. It keeps it from drying out. Since mushrooms are like 90% water. More water bigger mushrooms.

Yeah, in my limited (but successful) experience, the human eye is all you need to judge humidity. Just make sure the walls are dripping with condensation and the lid is collecting some condensation as well. That's 100% RH. Also, your cakes had condensation on them, so there's more than enough H2O around.
Also, when you dunk the cakes, get the tallest pot or vase you can find, then use a place or glass to hold the cakes on the bottom. The pressure will force water in.

yes, that is true. People generally try to avoid actual visible droplets on the cakes, which are probably coming from over-misting (not from too high RH).
Just keep a good 3" of soaking wet perlite, fan frequently, mist occasionally. Keep by a window for light.

i've reached the end of the 1st flush.
limited results. a few caps to write home about.
this is the latest. crunchy cheeto looking shroom:
the cap was eaten away on top. i don't understand it.
possible mutation?
i've been getting a lot of aborts. and i suspect this action to be bluing from too much moisture. opinions?
the dark semi-circle in the top left of cake is from a spore drop.
what a fucking mess.

yep to much moisture will casue mushrooms to look like that, and cause aborts. When you mist you have to fan off access water on fruits. Bruising usually happens whaen cake dries out or after you pick off fruits. Or if you handle that area you could have also bruised myc.
