 WTF!?! Why aren't my PF Jars working!?

Out of my first batch, I only birthed 3 out of 8 jars. I now have 6 more jars in the works that I innoculated over 3 weeks ago and all of them seem to be doing the same thing that the first failed ones did. The myclium(?) has started to grow, but looks rather thin and seems to have stopped. And there's a white glaze over the bottom half of the jars. It's not myclium, I don't know what it is. I let the first five losers sit for over a month before I finally threw them out. I don't know what the deal is, I did everything I was supposed to: steralized, and all that. WTF!?

Did you let them cool before innoculating them?
Are you using Brown Rice flour or something else in your substrate?
Did you flame sterilize the needle?
Where did you get the spores?

So the mycelium started to grow then stopped? Did you use enough water in you substrate?

this is a question not easily answered.
if your going to figure out where you went wrong, you need to scrutinize EVERY step you took, down to what brand BRF you were using. (if in fact you were using BRF)

Yes, I let the jars cool before innoculating.
I just bought Brown Rice from the grocery store, and used a coffee grinder.
I didn't really flame steralize the needle, well, I did a little the first time, but all I had was a lighter and I didn't like the look of the soot.
I got the spores from PF. They are PF and Stropharia(?).
The biggest thing I wasn't sure about was whether to keep them in the dark or not. I've heard it done both ways so I didn't think it was too big a deal. I've tried both ways to no avail.

Off the top of my head I believe it was:
1/4 cup BRF
1/2 cup VERM.
45cc Pond water
Just what the PF Tek Book called for.

Well, call me dumb, but I don't know how many cups 45 cc's are, but please tell me why you used pond water? And did you at least boil that pond water before you used it?

Don't use pond water, my God. Use spring water or tap water, if the tap water is good. You don't need to boil it or anything, just pressure cook the jars. Also, incubate the jars at around 85 degrees Fahrenheit, that REALLY helps growth.

There is nothing wrong with using pond water. In fact it can be a good thing.
How long did you let the jars cool?

Sounds like it could be a lack of flame sterilization during innoculation. I've read somewhere, like in one of the official teks, i think, that pond water is actually good to use. I use mineral water.

Good move using pond water. It has more nutrients in it than plain tap water or bottled water because there are organic thingimagigs in it. The people who think it was stupid to use it forget that they are supposed to sterilize the jars. Sterilizing the jars makes sure that all the possible contaminators are dead, so it really doesn't matter if you put used asswipe in the jar. I suspect you have a semi-dud of a syringe. I innoculated ten jars the other day and two didn't germinate. And use a quarter cup of water (60 cc's). I made some of my first jars with less water and they had shitty stringy mycelium. Try a new syringe with lots of little brown clumps and a mix of 1/4 cup water 1/4 BRF and 1/2 cup water

I've never flame sterilized my syringes and I haven't had any contams. PF is also not known for giving out a lot of bad syringes...
Did you use steam sterilization or a pressure cooker? If you steamed them, maybe there were things in the pond water that werent killed off...but I have nothing to base that guess on.

the white stuff at the bottom of the jar sounds like your rice flour got all gunky on the bottom of your jar... and that stuff is really hard for mycelium to eat through.
I suggest looking up the PF Tek on this site and using their updated formula. I got jars like that until i used the updated formula. Now I'm all about the grain.
