if you can't find verm at a hardware store or in the garden section of a department store, there are many places to order it on the internet. and it's really light so shipping costs should be minimal. peat moss ->might<- work but i wouldn't waste spores trying to find out.

I could'nt find anything on this subject and as no one has answered I gonna hazzard a guess and a flame.

FACTS
======
Peat moss is non nutritional as per Vermic - but it is also slightly acidic ph 4ish - This is why people add line/oyster shell/ calcium etc to peat casings - to get the ph to about 6.5 - 7.

Peat has a slightly lower water retention capacity to vermic

MY VIEW
========
Not based on experience.......
I Do not see any reason why in would'nt work.
I would suggest a small addition of Oyster Shell or Gypsum though.

The other problem you may have is getting the water content right (Vermic is nice and clean and easy, peats messy and easy to waterlog)

Good luck. Oh abd Verm really is quite abundant - most garden centre stock it for the cultivation of plants.

For PF Tek, I really don't think it is a good sub for verm. Consider the reasons why you would use verm in you jars...moisture& consistency

I heard vermiculite has been banned in a few states because supposedly there's asbestos in it.

A substitute I've heard of is called Loam. Don't know more about it than it's name though...

Loam is a loose soil composed of sand and clay with a high humus content. it has sustantially less water retaining ability than verm or peat

asbestos contaminated verm has been found in one mine. verm is not banned in any state. ItsAllGood is right on about loam.

I use plain peat+oyster shells for casings. It works fine...Never compared it to a verm casing or a 50/50+ though. I can't find verm where i live.

I don't think it will work for a substitute to verm in PF jars though...It would make the substrate thick and messy.

Good Luck! :tongue:
