Cheap alternative to 1/2pint jars
    #1020862 - 11/04/02 02:07 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

A cheap alternative to 1/2 pint jars is to use plastic drinking cups. Not all cups will work they should be the clear ones made of polypropylene (pp recycling number five on the base.) they are the ones that don?t crack if you squeeze them. use them as you would jars. But cap with microwaveable cling film/ saran wrap. Poke 4 small holes at edge and steam as before. The cups don?t melt at 100C but will not handle pressure cooking. These are really cheap at just a few pence each, so no need to spend a fortune on jars  They could even be reused if washed well.

hope it's useful

$8 for a dozen re-usable jars doesn't seem like a small fortune.

I'm not so sure this topic is advanced but....
In tanks defense, Polypropylene bowls can be very useful.
Depending on the thickens of there walls, they can be boiled, microwaved, steamed, and yes, even pressure cooked to 270+ F.

If they have a nice sealing lid they're even more useful

Think of the possibilities..........

I've used Polypropylene petris, and it's a decent material. I just don't see it working in a microwave with plastic wrap.

I live in Japan and wasn't sure if I could find the proper jars here so I decided on these plastic tupperware pseudo jars. I use the smaller one which has a capacity of about 270 mL. It was listed on the site as 240 mL, but it holds 270.

I don't have a pressure cooker but I steamed them for an hour and a half. Some of the edges of aluminum foil on the top of the containers were burnt, but the plastic was intact. 10 days later and colonization is coming along nicely. For the lids I just heated up a metal thing and made the holes. The lids don't get all gunked up like jar lids. I've always thought glass was best(being a weed smoker), but I think I have converted to plastic. I don't want to plug a site but here's where I got them...this is how we do it Japanese style.

it really does work. try a test. stick an inch of water in a cup cover with film, poke a hole to vent the steam. nuke in the microwave for a few mins with the water boiling, if you have the right cup it will hold its shape.

oh and i agree $8 for a dozen ain't bad, but for us poor people in england we can't get them near that cheap :frown:

For uk people...

You can get canning jars in sainsbury's for ?1.19 each full with top quality jam - real good stuff. That's cheap enough for me (if you use your nectar card and buy them on your barclaycard then they work out even cheaper than that). You can get three at a time into the cheapest pressure cooker that Index sell which is ?25. I've never had any contam problems using these together. I just don't see clingfilm and cheapo plastic cups as very sturdy and contam proof (and not very good for the environment).

Still, if you don't know anyone who wants some really nice jam...
