Albums that can be described best as divine psychedelic journeys

I'd love to hear some of your thoughts on this. I'm not talking about good individual songs or just any album that doesn't force you to skip tracks. I'm talking about albums that take your mind away for the entirety and leave you feeling floored by the end.
My feeling is that any album that can be an incredible psychedelic journey is something with enough emotional movement and depth to simply be an amazing album all around. Playing with the mind and giving the imagination a playground is truly the key to perfect art.
These ones qualify for me, hands down: John Frusciante - The Empyrean The Porcupine Tree - In Absentia Mew - And The Glass Handed Kites Boards of Canada - The Campfire Headphase
A few more come close, albums by Blonde Redhead, The Smashing Pumpkins, and Plaid, to name a few - but they just don't have the out of this world impact that the above list does.
So who's got some albums to add?

Most, if not all, Pink Floyd albums.

Nothing Lasts, But Nothing is Lost by Shpongle.
An obvious choice I suppose, but whenever I listen to this album while tripping I always have a turbulent yet productive trip. I can't think of a single other album which so completely works in conjunction with tripping - in my opinion it is the ultimate psychedelic, spiritual music.
I generally play it from the onset through the peak of the trip and get a sense of enthusiastic joy coming from the mushroom energy towards the music.
I think it's to do with how swiftly, yet smoothly, that particular Sphongle album moves through different variations - it seems to provided constant and evolving stimulation for the psilocybin enriched mind.
Ram & Posford conjured up magic with that album, hopefully the 4th album will be a worthy addition.

I agree this album is really special...
It's very playful, got lots of variation, harmony, chaos, joy, sadness...

It's mostly the Beatles and Floyd that help me in divine journeys. Although I find the beatles more uplifting, filled with peace and love.

I really love Moody Blues when I'm tripping, their music is absolutely amazing. Very insightful lyrics that leave you thinking, with fucking superb sounds to boot. Haven't listened to much of their later music, but anything before 1972 is triptastic. I personal favorite would probably be "A Question of Balance"
King Crimson is fantastic too! In the Court of King Crimson is a fucking trip when you're sober, damn is that music spectacular. I really want more King Crimson to check out.
Yes, as already stated Pink Floyd is some of the best tripping music, truly top quality. For me, I ALWAYS trip with Obscured by Clouds somewhere in the playlist, my favorite album ever.
I've recently ran into Enigma, The Screen Behind the Mirror. I haven't taken a journey with it yet but just jamming out to it makes me want to.
Thievery Corp ha some chill fucking music, excellent for tripping. Their music just jams and flows so well, it's amazing. My favorite album so far is "The Comic Game", hah simply sweet. The name attracted me, the music trapped me.

"ummagumma" pink floyd; deep and dark
"everything ecstatic" fourtet; forceful and sincere positivity and spirituality.
"surrender" the chemical brothers; the first electronic music I ever went out and bought, also my introduction to truly trippy music.
ummagumma is great for the intense introspection and the other two are simply spiritual to get up and dance to.
I find myself wanting to listen to alot of music that isn't overtly trippy during a trip, especially jazz, bluegrass/gospel. They usually bring an earthy humanistic feel whereas the truly trippy music can leave me out in space sometimes.

Liquid Tension Experiment (1 and 2) - Liqud Tension Experiment
Its the guys from Dream Theater playing instrumental music. Progressive fusion. Very trippy and very good. I highly recommend it! LTE 1 is very intense. Paradigm Shift, The Stretch, Universal Mind, Three Minute Warning. Give it a shot.
Also, a few of the live shows from Phish are mind blowing! Anything Porcupine Tree is phenomenal. Anything Pink Floyd is orgasmic.

Glad to see so many suggestions. I knew I'd see some Pink Floyd in here, although they've never done it for me for some reason. That said, they're meh for me sober so I don't listen to them tripping. Maybe if I gave it a shot things would change.
I flipped out when I took Ayahuasca, died and went to another plane of existence for a while. Apparently I collapsed face down on some furniture during that time, and when I came back from the beyond my roommates had moved me to a comfy chair and set up Shpongle with winamp visuals in front of me.

Pink Floyd is the obvious pick,
I love them while tripping like no other.
Nothing comes close in my book.
Love them sober too
Wish You Were Here and Dark Side of the Moon best albums.
Although a lot of them are great too, Meddle, Piper, etc.
not to mention Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band and Revolver by the Beatles, they're great too, although Sgt. Peppers can be scary, I have bad memories with Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite haha.

A good live Grateful Dead concert (exceptional! Probably want a 1968-1971 for the depth of a trip) A good live Phish concert Sun Ra's later albums (and if you can find him live it's excellent)
and
Nico: The Frozen Border Line 1968-1970
The above is a remaster of Nico's wonderful The Marble Index with better versions of some of the songs included. YET I never listened to it tripping, I would imagine it being excellent because here music is very immersible, atmospheric, and beautifully heady. The drawback being it's dark and depressing and might bring down the mood in a more vulnerable mindstate. It's really an experience worthy album, though.

*Pink Floyd*Pink Floyd*Pink Floyd*Pink Floyd* Obviously...
Infected Mushroom Sigur Ros Shpongle Explosions in the Sky
First three had already been mentioned. I had a particularly memorable trip with Sigur Ros when I sent away my college housing app back in high school, since then its been tripping music close to my heart. First trip/tons of subsequent have been to every pink floyd album, truly spectacular... Explosions in the sky is nice chill groove music. And we haven't forgotten about shpongle, though there a relatively new sound to me, I guess I heard em' pretty late.

I completely agree with LTE, paradigm shift is the most insane thing ever, I listened to it last time I tripped, it was incredible. Acid rain is also a good one. I think Lateralus by Tool would have to be the best, some Dream Theater songs are great though.

I don't know whether it's good for psychedelics (I'd imagine, haven't tried listening on psychs yet) but Bola - Fyuti is a ridiculously divine dissociative journey.

Kinda random note,
but DXM made me love punk music,
listened to Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables on my most intense trip and I've loved punk ever since.

that's a pretty ignorant statement,
what's considered a "psychedelic journey" to some might not be the same to another,
i consider fresh fruit an angry psychedelic journey

Im a huge fan of jazz, but when I heard this it was inspiring because this is essentially just 3 noobs that can rock my sox off.
I mean, they could hook up with john medeski and he would make this ablum go down in the books.
Its so chilled out and free form. So little skill but so much musical intelligence. That sort of shit amazes me.

Yeah McDuff's the shit.
There is no such thing as jazz-funk that isn't cool to trip to or anything else.
All the music I listen to I would trip to, so these treads really just give me a chance to obsess in any given direction.

Yeah, that John Abercrombie is tight.
I need to get some of his stuff.
Scofield just needs to stay with MMW.
They mesh.
I saw MMW a few years back, and I saw the Wood Brothers about a year ago.
I'm off to bed.

Yeah, stuff like Sigur Ros, Air, Sounds From the Ground, Fila Brazillia, Bonobo, Leftfield, Boards of Canada, Zero 7, Thievery Corporation, ATB, M83, Jose Padilla, Underworld, Rara Avis, The Orb, Kaskade, 3-11 Porter, etc.
Some folks call it downtempo or chillout, and I guess there might be a difference between downtempo and chillout, but at the essense, it is mellow electronica with more jazz, reggae, or latin influenced beats than house-influenced beats.

All the albums I posted, and you bring this dead thread back about that album?
I am sure it is cool.
That's the Chili Pepper's guitarist right?
Is that the solo album he made when he was wacked on Heroin?

Jimi Hendrix of course!! Any album... that dude tripped alot! They are all great journeys...

he's got a point. if I had a nickel for everytime someone mentioned Pink Floyd, The Beatles, The Doors, or even BoC, I could retire. seems like many people have very limited musical palettes
venture outside major record labels, there is a lot of good music out there that isn't on Sony, Virgin, Electra, or Capitol Records. of course everyone and their mom has heard of the Beatles, who were pretty much overglorified pop artists; Frank Zappa, a real musical genius, even called them out

Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon", or "The Wall"
and 1200 Micrograms' "1200 Micrograms"
-------------------- "I believe with the advent of acid we discovered new way to think and it had to do with piecing together new thoughts of mind. Why is it that people think it's so evil? What is it about it that there is scares people so deeply? Because they are afraid that there is more to reality than they have ever confronted. That there are doors that they're afraid to go in and they don't want us to go in there either because if we go in, there we might learn something that they don't know. And that makes us a little out of their control. " - Ken Kessey

Everybody has already mentioned Pink Floyd, but the album in particular that would be described as a divine pyschedelic journey to me (other than than obvious stuff) would actually be Atom Heart Mother (Not the album just the suite).

Sound Tribe Sector 9 - I really can't believe no one had mentioned them yet. A great place to start is their album "Artifact". However, their live shows are where its at. They have one of the best light shows in the scene. Download some of their shows (and many others) for free at www.archive.org

An obvious one is:
The Rolling Stones - Their Satanic Majesties Request
(I'll leave out Beatles albums, they should be given in a thread like this)
Bjork - Vespertine (Homogenic too)
Animal Collective - Feels (agreeing with the others who posted it, though I'd have to reccomend just about every album by this band particularly 'Sung Tongs' and 'Strawberry Jam' as well)
Panda Bear - Person Pitch (couldn't stop dancing when this was coupled with psilo)
Joanna Newsom - Ys (a orchestral folk epic, goes great with psychedelics, believe it or not)
Sleep - Jerusalem (also known as Dopesmoker) is a serious weed journey, not necessarily a divine psychedelic journey but easily the best heavy stoner epic.
Brightblack Morning Light - S/T (I have a feeling this would be nothing but good times coupled with entheogens, supremely lax organ jam rock)
Zombies - Odessey & Oracle (one of the early psychedelic pop masterpieces in my opinion)
The Beach Boys - Smiley Smile (easily their most psychedelic work, not to mention a beautiful cohesive work of art)
Caribou - Andorra (I don't think I've had a more powerful experience listening to music while tripping than with this album, every lyric seemed to be speaking about me, affirming my existence, taken with my first homegrowns, will never forget)
Feathers - S/T (really beautiful vermont mountain people collective psychedelic folk)
Flower Travellin' Band - Satori (if you haven't heard this Japanese Psych Rock masterpiece, please, please seek it)
Greg Weeks - The Hive (I mean, just look at the cover, guitarist of the band 'Espers', this solo album is so much better than Espers work if you ask me, thoroughly psychedelic)
Lucky Dragons - Dream Island Laughing Language (also the album 'Widows', L.A. eclectic mind-manifesting electronic music)
Morning Dew - S/T (great psychedelic hard rock)

The obvious outta the way first
Pink Floyd - DSotM, Animals, Meddle Hallucinogen - Twisted, The Lone Deranger Younger Brother - A Flock of Bleeps (Scanner rapes my soul) Tool - Aenima, Lateralus, 10,000 Days Shpongle - Are You Shpongled? Ott - Blumenkraft
And the lesser knowns.
Colour Haze - start from Periscope and keep going til their new album, All.
Causa Sui - They got three albums out, their first two with a singer and their last without a singer. They got two more releases coming out right about now, called Summer Sessions Vol. 2 & 3. check the video

-------------------- “Throughout human history, as our species has faced the frightening, terrorizing fact that we do not know who we are, or where we are going in this ocean of chaos, it has been the authorities, the political, the religious, the educational authorities who attempted to comfort us by giving us order, rules, regulations, informing, forming in our minds their view of reality. To think for yourself you must question authority and learn how to put yourself in a state of vulnerable, open-mindedness; chaotic, confused, vulnerability to inform yourself. Think for yourself. I feel that most Shroomerites feel that one should listen specific types of music when they are tripping.
Doesn't anyone appreciate a variety of genres when you trip?
How about some jazz, blues, classic r&b, funk, classical, and even hip hop to add to the reportoire?

Maybe jazz or classical in my case, but the other genres are too " upbeat " for me, even though I know they are mellow. Thing is, I'm the mellowest man around! I like my music to be etheric

I posted this in another thread earlier, but since we're on the subject, it can go here as well.
It should be noted that in an interview, Tool's Maynard James Keenan stated that their album "10,000 Days" would best be experienced under the influence of psilocybin. I found this album to be a journey of a thousand years, and every time you find yourself getting tired of a certain beat or guitar sound, it changes, as if they knew exactly when to do what at the right times. The end result is astounding, and I had several moments of rapture while hearing this album. Also, I blame/credit the song "Rosetta Stoned" with my first experience of "Ego Death".

That was the first post, lol I love that album. I looked at more of his work, and was initially disappointed to find that he never makes any two albums of the same sound. But really, it's kind of cool regarding it as a unique gem in the sprawling musical realm.

I strongly suggest this album too:
Fripp & Eno - The Equatorial Stars
it makes the most sober man on earth trip
(Yes he's Robert Fripp of King Crimson!)

Ophanim said: I'd love to hear some of your thoughts on this.
So who's got some albums to add?
all of TOOL's albums are perfect for tripping. i'm wondering why nobody mentions 10,000 Days? omg, i can't even explain what that album does when i'm on mushrooms. it's a guide to another dimension, but so much more. maybe you're too young, as 10,000 days is about 27 years, 4 and one half months. try it with a partner, when ur trippin, put on 10,000 Days and sit and gaze thru each others' eyes... like the lenses on the cd cover. the instructions are in the music! just listen. Lateralus is a 7 part spectral meditation tool, a tool for self-realization, self-improvement, etc., etc. it helped get me off drugs. it energizes and rejuvenates and aligns the chakras. and the videos... have you noticed that they are not the same each time u watch them? their art is a living entity that we are all consciously co-creating, and it is very much linked with the realm of psychedelics.
