I don't know, but what benefit does UV light have over white (mixed) light? Wouldn't it just sunburn the mushrooms? Looks cool though! Myk

I've read about UV causing interesting mutations. I designed a rather small PC board to light mine. Using 10 LED's 5 Pure white 6000k and 5 Blue 7000k, so far I have had wonderful pinning with them. Also wired them up to run straight from 9v I'll get a few pictures if I can.

Please do! And any other info would be awesome. I've probably have everything I need for it except the LED's - tons of breadboard and stuff in a box.

I think that this is far too interesting an experiment not to report back on. Especially if it had a comparison: same strain, substrate, casing, housing, all that, and see which pins more.

After a few hours of reading... I'll probably end up using this UV LED setup to initiate pinning, and I'll switch to a 6000-6500k light source for fruiting.

PF (himself) did a similar study using UV lights 24/7 less than a 1/4 above the shrooms, this is were the PF Classic strain almost died off. It does cause interesting mutations but it also effects the shrooms on a genetic level causing stalling in later generations (unable to fruit).
I agree with the previous posters, keep us updated-just don't be expecting to keep those genetic lines going for more than a couple of generations under those conditions

Here we go.
The boards-
Board next to a battery-
With a flash, then without-
Light on a wall... with flash and without. This is about 6" from the wall and the black thing they are on is about 14" wide for reference. I believe the 'beam' to be about 3 feet wide at a distance of only about 7-8" away.

Or you can PM me and I can help design a circuit based on what you have to work with. A really common thing is 5v power (from a PC power supply or a phone charger, etc)

i have a 457nm fluorescent tube used for tropical blue light for reef coral as a source of light. Although im starting to doubt its effectiveness. Next time i'l take a 6500K tube. But i wish you the best of luck. as far as i know only short band UV light kills bacteria and damages mycelium.
ps i saw later that its 395nm. this is to short and is probably damaging to mycelium. you need at least 450nm til about 500.

virus makes a REALLY important point. The wavelength of LED's in the UV spectrum is quite limited and may not damage the mycelium/mushroom fruit body's DNA at all. (Looks like yours are limited to about 30nm) Perhaps you'll get lucky and not harm the mycelium at all.

I'm going to use this setup to initiate an even pinset when the time comes. I plan on keeping em on for maybe a minute or two (max) for the pinning stage.
Quote:
BADHAM E R The effect of light upon basidiocarp initiation in Psilocybe cubensis. Mycologia; Vol. 72 (1980) p 136-142 Formation of basidiocarp initials in Psilocybe cubensis occurred only when cultures were illuminated. Short durations of light (0.0025 sec of xenon-arc flash) were sufficient for initiation. Light-induced initiation was saturated at a dose of 3450 erg/cm^2 at 460 nm. UV and blue wavelengths of 370, 440 and 460 nm were the most effective. Green and red wavelengths greater than 510 nm were ineffective.
After I get pins, I may do the same thing and allow 1-2 minutes a day with this UV setup, and 10-12 hours of natural daylight 6500k fluorescents afterwards.
I'll keep the results up to date in my log!

Good info. I like where this thread went.
I plan on doing a side by side with two of my lamps from above VS one 6500k fluorescent with one of my isolates. This will give me an idea of how good my light is for pinning and growth.
