Hpoo tray doing great, then turned brown. Any ideas?
    #10199739 - 04/20/09 05:04 AM (15 years, 12 hours ago)

Hello all-
Here's the situation.
Four hpoo compost trays, all made with pasteurized hpoo.  All were colonizing well on April 5:

They were left alone for a week, and this is their current state:

No bad smell, but trays A and B's mycellium has all turned brown.  I was thinking that this could be due to hpoo that was too wet, but how does that explain the high percentage of colonized substrate and then the sudden downturn?

This is a close up of one of the bad trays:

And one of the remaining trays that still has white myc:

What caused this?  How to prevent it from happening to the remaining two trays?
Thanks for your input!

you should try and get some closer pics of those trays.

one big thing you dont want to be doing to a colonizing tray is opening it up though.

Looks like too wet of a substrate has caused this.  Here is the progression of things:

1; you spawned the grains/whatever to the overly wet substrate.
2: The substrate began colonising with myc,, but so did the bacterial population as well (as seen when myc is healthy in 1st pic)
3: Eventually the bacteria get to a point where they attack the myclelia, (a competitor for nutes). They do this when their numbers get great enough to attack.  That is why the mycelia was seemingly doing well at FIRST.....
4: A couple of your trays colonized fast enough to where the mycelia are putting up a fight right back at the bacteria., thus they are still colonizing, but slower i'm guessing.

If there is ONE AND ONLY ONE tip i can give novice poo growers, it is to make sure your on the dry side when spawning.

You can always add more water if the tubs stall, but its very difficult, if not near impossible to reverse a bacterial contamination in the midst of colonisation.
