Atlanta Becoming Hub for Drug Cartels

ATLANTA - Atlanta is becoming a major hub of operation for Mexican drug cartels. Federal agents say the same traits that attract legitimate businesses to Atlanta also attract drug lords.

Meth, pot, coke -- illegal drugs from Mexico shipped to eastern states using Atlanta as a major distribution point.

"We now ship more drugs from Atlanta to Florida than we get from Florida," said U.S. Attorney David Nahmias.

U.S. Attorney David Nahmias said the same things that make Atlanta attractive for legitimate business, make the southeast's largest metropolitan area a logical base for operatives in Mexican drug cartels.

The city is a transportation hub, boasting interstates in six directions that will take you anywhere east of the Rockies in less than 24 hours. The preferred mode of transport: trucks with sophisticated compartments to hide the drugs.

"We'll see a tractor-trailer come from the Southwest border, come up to a place, where they would pull in and they would wait for further instructions," said Rodney Benson of the DEA.

Smugglers take the drug shipments to stash houses in Atlanta, where they're broken down into smaller amounts and shipped to distributors in other eastern states. Money from sales makes the reverse route to Atlanta, where it's counted, wrapped and sent back to Mexico.

Federal authorities use a combination of undercover agents, wiretaps, confidential informants to infiltrate the cartels.

"I think we've been able to do that fairly successfully in recent years with some of the cartels -- not destroying the entire cartel, but really causing some pain," said Nahmias.

Investigators said cartel operatives have taken advantage of a recent influx of Latino immigrants to the Atlanta area.

"You see cartel representatives follow behind. Go into those same communities where they've been able to blend in plain sight," Benson said.

Investigators blame the cartels for a handful of recent kidnappings in metro Atlanta -- most involving disputes over money among the drug traffickers themselves. While violence in the city is nowhere near the levels just south of the Mexican border, authorities want to curb the problem before innocent citizens get caught in the crossfire.

drive them out of there and they will go somewhere else. even if you arrest all of them there will be more to fill the void, if not more than before.

take the profit out and end prohibition.

Atlanta has always had plenty of coke and meth and weed. That's for sure. Plenty of Mexicans and illegal immigrants also. This is nothing new.

Ill agree with that.ATL... takes 4 hrs to get there, 4 back... but the price was totally worth every second of it.Especially on the way back.

They do a good job of pointing out why there is so much going into ATL tho, its right in the middle of it all.
