Mountain Bike, WTF

So I just got this bike last week. I haven't had a bike in probably ten years, so I don't know what the fuck I'm doing at all.
Well, I'm riding this thing along the trail next to the river and I must've shifted fucked up or something, because the chain got stuck between two gears and the pedals wouldn't move at all. Well, they would move a bit with a bunch of force but then would spin back to release tension as soon as you stopped pushing.
So I walked it home and now I see the chain is all fucked up. It fell off the derailleur, and is not on any gears at all.
How do I get it back on the derailleur? There is a little slot, but it's not big enough for the chain to fit through. Do I really have to fucking take the chain apart to get it back through?

It's this same derailluer, it won't fit through the notch on the silver part in the far bottom left..
WTF. I really don't want to have to strap this thing to the top of my car and take it to the shop already.
Bike Repair Failure.

It sounds like a simple thing to fix, but an actual picture would be more helpful. Do you mean the chain is too thick to fit through, or the tension is too high to pull through?

I don't know what your talking about but can you not bend the thing to give the chain more slack?

Okay, so this is the notch that I mean.
This is on the far-bottom-left of the picture above. The black gear wheel for the derailleur is right inside this. I can get the chain on the gear, but not through this notch. It just doesn't fit. Not because of tension, it's totally loose. The chain just doesn't physically fit through this gap. What gives?

Yeah breaking the chain is what you do to get it on the derailleur. Look for a master link on the chain; those you can slide apart with your fingers. If you don't have one then you need to get your hands on a chain break tool.

Can you push the entire rear derailer forward to give the chain slack and then place the chain back on?

I figured that was what was necessary.
I don't know how the fuck it came through this gap in the first place.
I hope I didn't fuck it up!
Thanks, Dude!

The chain isn't on the front gears at all.
It's totally slack.

If it just came off there really shouldn't be any need to unlink the chain. You should be able to snake it back onto the crank and, as long as there aren't any kinks, pedal a few times to get it back on the derailleur.

Yes, I totally could. If not for that fucking slot.
I can loop the chain through the gear on the derailluer, but the chain won't fit through the slot I posted above.
I imagine the slot is supposed to make it so the chain can't fall off, but somehow I fucked it up enough to make it do so.

Just rode it back from the shop.
Apparently I had fucked the derailleur hanger all to shit.
It was totally bent and fucked, which is why the chain slide off.
I was like a few mm from needing a new derailleur.
Fixed for free though! New hanger and I am back on the road.
Until I hit something else.

Is this a new bike or you got it used?
I just gave up with normal 'mountain' bikes cause their not really mountain bikes. I ride a bike like it's meant to be riden and normal bikes just can't take the abuse and the rims bend, derailers fuck up etc.
Careful when switching gears though cause you could get the chain to derail which sucks cause then you're hands get full of grease :P
Bike riding is the best, I don't know how you went 10 years without a bike. I couldn't do it. I'd rather ride my bike then take a car.

It's brand-spanking new.
I was giving it a hard time yesterday though, I didn't know the thing was so fucking delicate.

Yeah, I mean, I'm not planning on riding the fucking thing down Pike's Peak.
But if my choice is this or a skinny-tired commuter bike, I'm certainly going to take this.
