makes sense.  where would be a good place to do it then?

and i think i'll make a glove box (without the gloves or whatever).  i've got an extra box laying around.

i also found some windex i had lying around that says it kills 99.9% of bacteria within seconds.  would that be good to use to sterilize or would the bleach/water solution be better?

i'm still keeping an eye on the remaining 4 jars.  also working on acquiring a pressure cookers.

thanks.

bathroom is good if you have a separate toilet room. for sterilization i use camden solution, its used for brewing beer, its food grade bleach basically. if u need it in aerosol form i would recommend dettol 3 in 1 , sanitizes air and surfaces.

hey dead, or anyone else following along, my toilet is in the same room as the rest of the bathroom.  i don't have any other spots that seem good.  they are all big and open areas, with carpet etc.

any other options?  or what would be best?

i do mine out in the open. as long as you check then double check your jars before mixing into your pasteurized substrate you should be ok.......are you planning on grain transfers?

i was just doing the normal inoculation of the 1/2 pint jars.

it now seems that almost all of them are contam'd.

i guess i should hold out for a pressure cooker.

damnit!

if they are boil/pc right, then try using silicon on your inoculation hole, it will invaginate back once the needles removed. the breather hole use band aids, they come sterile.....never take the lid off or loosen it.....dont do the seal band up, do it the way the jar intended......

maybe your foil lids are crap?

i got the syringes from the spore store (online).

My condolences...

Order a syringe from a trusted vendor (http://www.shroomery.org/sponsors.php) and try again.

Use a glovebox to inoculate, flame the needle before each inoculation, etc. etc. etc.

And get a pressure cooker as soon as you can.

i'm pretty sure they were steamed right.  i've got 4 inoculation holes, which are all breather wholes too.

i did have the rubber seal up though.  i'm pretty sure that's what the pftek said, although i was confused about this.

i'm sure the foil does suck.  lol.

thanks dead.  once i run through these syringes, i will definitely order from a sponsor ( i should have thought about that before ordering.  i got too gung-ho.  silly and stupid!)

i am about to put together a glove box.

and i did flame the needle between each inoculation.

working on the pressure cooker.

i'm afraid to waste anymore spores, yet i'm excited to get on with some successful research!

id say in ur situ to make a still air/glove box for inoculations. with so many of your jars going down, id say it has to be one of two things; either your syringe held contaminates and a few jars luckily didnt recieve any, or more likely IMO the jars didnt get a proper sterilization coupled with slightly high temp which has meant mold/ bacteria took hold before the mycaelium.

if your using pot+steam method of sterilization, maybe weight the lid if this is possible and make sure u start timing five minutes after the pan has come to a rolling boil and the lid has been placed on. this will give time for steam to build up in the pan so you know for the 90 minute duration they are surrounded by steam. when done leave in pan to cool overnight, this is to let them cool in a clean environment so the change in pressure between inside the jar and outside of the jar does not introduce contaminates.

also let your jars breath once inoculated, if you have a dry verm layer, this will act as a filter so u can have the top 4 holes exposed to the air, if your worried about contams u can use little pieces of micropore tape to cover the holes (as IME when brf jars are steamed the dry verm layer doesnt always stay dry). good gas exchange can help prevent things like cobweb mold that thrive in jars and on casings that cant breath.

best of luck on your grow, every failure is a step towards success.

thanks deaddog!

i think the still-air box is a done deal.  i'll make one tonight or tomorrow.

i'm assuming with you that the sterilization process was what did it.  i took the jars out almost as soon as they were done.  i understand what you are saying.

i truly appreciate all of the help.

i don't want to waste any more of the spores i have til i find out something about a pressure cooker.

thanks again, to everyone!

ok, no new pics at the moment.  but i have invested in a pressure cooker and a still-air box.  ok, a tote that will be a still-air box.

i hope to have everything done by tomorrow.  i guess time will tell.  there's a few other projects going on too.

oh yeah, quick question for johnwayne or anyone else kind enough to answer.  john said not to use my rubber gaskets up.  is this for the pressure cooking/steaming, or during the whole process or what?

i'm just a touch confused.

thanks agian!

i dunno what he meant about using gaskets up, my pc has one rubber gasket on the inside of the lid, the only gasket based advice i know of is replace it if it starts to perish and paint a little veg oil on the rubber before using the pressure cooker.

i am talking about the gaskets on the mason jars.  in the pftek it says use them up.

someone recommended not doing that.

i'm confused about that.  i do have everything ready to go tomorrow!!!

you should have not incubated the jars, just put in a sterile box or clean closet away from light,  it looks like your jars receive a lot of light were they are at. And your substrate looks way to damp, it should be fluffy wit the feeling of having moisture, not damp.

I Use you this recipe for for pf jars

this is for 5 Jars  1 cup BRF, 1 Cup Water, 2 Cups Verm

light is advantagous to colonizing jars and keeping them in a position where they get a little sunlight and free flowing air is very beneficial.

need proof? read this

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/8468474#8468474

i understand what he meant about the gasket now, the metal disc that fits into the canning lid has rubber round the lip on one side, you need the rubber coated side of the disc facing up so the jar opens easily.

ok, will do dead.

i'm getting ready to make my new jars.  i've read that cooling for a minimum 5 hours, preferably overnight.

i've only got a 6 quart pressure cooker, so i'd prefer not to have to let them sit over night in the pressure cooker so i can finish them all at the same time.

what are you guys and gals thoughts?  i'll do whatever is best

rios, the substrate wasn't that damp until i steamed them.  i guess my lids weren't on tight enough.  whoops.  and i have a pressure cooker now so i hope this fixes it (along with closing the jars tighter!).

you dont wanna take the jars straight out of the pc, cause under pressure water boils at a higher point, so when u depressureize the cooker right away the moisture in you cake will start to evapourate. i usually leave for 1-2 hours to cool on the backstep before unloading inside and allowing the jars to cool natuarally on the worktop.
