Aquarium heater probs!!
    #1019054 - 11/03/02 06:21 PM (21 years, 4 months ago)

AFOAF is trying to use an aquarium heater to make an incubation chamber. The temp in thechamber never goes above 76 degrees. Ambient temp is 78-80. They're using a Visi-There Deluxe adjustable, submersible heater. The first one didn't work so it went back for another of the same model.
The second one went in, was allowed to 'rest' for 30 mins and then plugged in. No difference in temp 4 hours later WTF???? Any ideas????

You are submersing it right ?  Maybe it's just a bad model or it's for very small aquariums.  Or perhaps your thermometer is what's broken?  Those are the only ideas I can think of.

It's suction cupped to the bottom of the tub, fully submersed. The clerk a the store assured me itwas fully submersible.

Have you tried these two things?
1. Plugging the unit in.
2. Select the desired temperature?

It's plugged in.
They turned it up to 86 degrees. The water doesn't circulate, so they agitated the water to mix it up. It seems to be heating the bottom of the upper tub, but not the air temp inside it. How long should it take for the chamber and jars to warm up to the desired temp?

At least a couple of hours. Leave it as it is, don't check it, and then tomorrow see whats up. If the temp still hasn't risen, then take it back. What's the wattage?

Me being a newbie, added cold water to the water that my aquarium heater was in and it cracked the heater, it still works but I broke it, just a lesson of wisdom

It's a 50watt.
I wonder if dark vs. light color of the tub matters.

If this one doesn't work try to upgrade to a hundred watt. How long has it been heating, and how many times have you checked on it?

I thought about a bigger heater, but the chart on the box says a 50W will heat 10 gals 18 degrees above room temp.
It's been heating for about 2 hours, well see how it goes in the morning. They're tempted to put a heater inside the tub, but then they'll never know if the submersible works.

The tap water was a bit chilly when it was filled.

Yeah, just wait till the morning to take any action, I'm betting that you will wake up to a plesant suprise. Just remember, everytime you check on it, you let the warm air out, so any work that it had done has been cancelled by your curiosity.
