mycobag grow
    #1019242 - 11/03/02 07:48 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

Ok, my pet turtle got ten mycobags and decided he would make an incubator for them, and he would k=like to know what you think. He got one of those big rubbermaid containers w/lid. Using a fish pump he put tubing throughout the container, then covered that with about three inches of perlite. He then put the bags on top of the perlite and turned on the pump. It has stayed at about 83 degrees, its been about six days and nuthin yet. One bag kinda stinks and has some wierd milky shit in it. Is it possible that outside water has got in the bag and infected it or is this far fetched. Any suggestions, comments, or past experiences would greatly be appreciated.
THANX

Weird milkey shit? Was someone drunk last night? If I were you, I'd take the weird bags out. I don't understand your set up, and why is there perlite in the incubator, you don't need it.

yeah you dont need the perlite for the incubation...just keep you bags in the container and keep them at that 83 degrees you had and that should be good.

I have a water pump in a bucket and it is sending water through the tubing. The wet perlite covers the tubing, therefore makes humidity.
The contamination looks like mycillium but it is darker kinda light brown and I can smell it.
Oh I also have a heater in the water bucket.

You don't need all that much humidity when incubating, and that setup sounds awful complicated and ineffective. Why not just do one of these:

yea dude, mycobags are setup to give your 1st flush w/no added humidity. just innoc, keep up to temp & wait. after 1st flush, innoc some sterile water into the cake (not sure how much, check the FAQ @sporeworks.com). and supposedly that gives enough moisture to give off 2nd flush. repeat again for hopefully 3rd. i got a few mycobags. 1-60%, 1-98% & 1-??

Since you're lookin' for opinions, dudeage:

You don't need a system. Just keep the Mycobag warm, and it'll be fine.

After the first flush, if you want, take the cake outa the bag, & put it in a 10-gallon tupperware with an inch of wet perlite in the bottom. Fan at least once a day.

There, you're done.

Ya but my turtle had ten before and i think they dried them out. So I decided to make my own humidity.
