Can someone tell me what exactly Baba Ram Dass means when he says " Be here now"?

Live moment to moment.. Forget the past, fuck the future - but better yourself through the present. That's my interpretation  :smirk:

agree, a great book. a bit dated, must put it in perspective. i recently saw ram dass's documentary, shot while he was recovering from a stroke. there was some really great footage from the 60s

No, no. I've heard of the book "Be Here Now". He said that there's a documentary film about Ram Das. I don't know what that's called. I've never seen that. I've never read the book either, although i'd like to one day.

I've been giving BHN as a gift for 30 years. The Here and Now (or, if you look at the book's spine, it is also Be Now Here), is about a theological point of view called a 'Realized Eschatology.' This means that the Presence of God, the Kingdom of God (or with Matthew, the Kingdom of Heaven) is an ever-present Reality which can be known in any given moment. Moreover, the Eternal Present exists outside of, or rather, transcends space-time. Eternity is a Transcendental Reality which does not mean indefinite duration. It is an order of Being which is prior to space-time. Space-time - creation - comes out of Eternity [God].

If one can slow the thought-flow sufficiently, concentrate sufficiently, one can experience Eternity 'showing through' between the microseconds. Hence the singular reason for contemplative prayer (called meditation in the East), and the spiritual use of psychedelic sacraments - to experience the Eternal Essence at the heart of Existence. The belief in such experiences, and its pursuit, is called Mysticism. BHN illustrates the common mystical element from several religious and esoteric traditions, without however, dealing with the distinctions in different formulas (e.g., the differences between the 'conceptions' of Buddhist Nirvana and Christian Heaven).

Living IN the moment is not the same as living FOR the moment - they are entirely different philosophies - the first is spiritual in the deepest, most profound sense; the latter is a hedonistic [pleasure-seeking] thing that does not result in ultimate fullfilment and meaning, but only a temporary satisfaction of desires.

I hope this explains BHN somewhat for you. -MtG

Yes , thank you Markos. Your reply was very helpful. Unlike the bonehead who replied with "It means exactly what it says."

Thank you for the thought. BHN helped propel me through life during the most intense 'seeking' stage. I learned to 'follow my bliss,' before Joseph Campbell suggested it, and even though the bliss was frequently clouded by great sadness, loneliness, fearfulness, horniness and despair, life has been really wonderful for last half dozen years.

BHN + psychedelics directed me upward from the first 3 chakra realms of existence to the Heart Cave, which drew down Light from the Crown and gave me the balance from Earth and Heaven. BHN fed my intellect and emotion - Sun and Moon - in a Yogic Conjunctio - like matter-anti-matter sci-fi engines that put me through degree programs in philosophy, theology and psychology; years of Jungian analysis; state licensure and national certifications. First to acquire knowledge, then to dispense it. BHN (and 'The Only Dance There Is') gave me my Doctoral dissertation idea that I began to write even before I got into grad school. All this stuff allowed me to make "green energy' (another BHN concept, i.e., money) to survive and even thrive on the physical plane. I owe a lot to BHN, and I once left Ram Dass a thankyou through his secretary via his website. I even climbed a slippery, muddy mountain road to the Lama Foundation in 1973 to say thanks, but found nobody home. But enough of this ramble. As you can perhaps tell, enthusiasm is still here...and now.

Well, thanks, but the other response was just not the type of minimalist answer that you needed. It does provide an answer if you simply stop...and repeat...BE HERE NOW...slowly. One can actually discover one's psychospiritual Center, if one takes this simple phrase as a literal direction to the Present - in all fairness to the other. OM Shanti.
