Pink oyster that is. Why r the cultures so high? The cheapest i found
was sporeworks. It is double other cultures.. What makes them so
special? What oyster can take the most heat? It gets hot here in the
summer. I need something that can handle some heat. i've have been
growing blue oyster. I also have Pearl Oyster that i am just starting
to fruit it now. thanks

It says $55 because it's only available as a culture slant currently, which is more expensive than a syringe. Perhaps you can email them and ask if you can buy a Pleurotus djamor culture syringe for $18.
They're probably not currently advertising it at the moment cuz it's out of stock, or some other reason... but maybe they'll hook you up
phoenixes, pinks and golden oysters are the "warmer" ones.

I can hook you up with a H ulmarius culture for the cost of shipping and you should PM Fabio (aka FreeSporePrints) about a Pleurotus djamor culture.

Well, phoenix oysters do well here in the desert. I was thinking about getting some lentinus squarrosulus too but I don't know where to order it from. I only found one place and it's very expensive.

Thanks for all the ideas!! I am growing mostly on straw and paper..
The spawn is brown rice. I am a carpenter- Framer. I am looking for
wood of some sort to mix in with the substrate. We us pine around
here, and i know they don't like it. DO any of u think it would be ok to put
S O B in it like ply wood that u put on roofs.. it is chips of
wood with glue
in it? Or should i go to the cabinet shop and get some of there
sawdust and mix in? The blue oyster i have been growing have been
doing great on the straw paper substrate. The elm that some of you all
mentioned. I have read that it likes some wood to make it meaty..

for real! Stay away from that shit... but cabinet show dust is generally a good idea, just find out what is in it. Fresh sawdust always seems to do a bunch better them dry (even after soaking back to hydration).

Make sure you don't use anything pressure treated. PT lumber is treated with creosote which is also used as a pesticide. Anything grown with or around pressure treated wood is going to absorb the creosote. I doubt the mycelium would survive to fruit, but just a suggestion.

Get a $25 sporeprint (not culture) from sporeworks of pinks. Yeah i was pretty pissed too seeing the $55 for a culture syringe when they used to be $15.

My guess is that the mycelium would either break down or exclude glues...but it would be expensive to prove the mushies were safe. I'd chance my own liver on it...but would not suggest yours.
Modern pressure treated is even much worse than creosote. It is mostly compounds of chromium and arsenic and copper. A lot of mushrooms are well known for accumulating and even concentrating heavy metals, so that's completely out.
Some growers have found that conifer sawdust that has been pressed into stove pellets under a lot of heat and pressure is a pretty good woodlover substrate. It seems to drive off volatiles that hamper the mycelium.
I'll bet that if you did a "Detergent Tek" with TSP cleaner that just about any wood will work. The effluent would have a lot of the resins and terpenses in it.
I'll be trying this in May when I move out into the country. We have lots of Fir, Spruce and Hemlock sawdust about.
It seems likely that the Calcium Hydroxide (Hydrated Lime) pasteurization tek would have the same effect, and make a sort of Pine-Sol soap in the process. The hydroxide ion is half of a soap molecule and the other half would be a pine oil.
I'm hoping to put my hands on a (free, leaky maybe?) front loading washer to semi-bulk sterilize/pasteurize/deterge substrates. In my dreams a giant-stainless steel laundromat kind....aah!
I'm NOT obsessed!
REALLY!

Shitballs Jethro ... I just went to homedepot the other day and asked the sawdust guy to empty the saw collector bin into the trashbag I brought with me. Got two 5 gallon buketfuls of unkown sawdust I had been planning on using.
Am I hearing that its probably not safe to use it ..... afterall, who the hell knows what type of wood its from much less any glue or treated products.
???????????????
