RogerRabbit said: The series 1 is a good buy if you don't have a wood working shop to make your own. It's about $150 more than the materials to build your own, so that's not a bad price. It's built with hardwood which isn't cheap. You could use pine plywood and save some money, but I like the finished hardwood on the unit. It will last a long time. I've had one for a long time, and have used it thousands of times.
You can simply duct tape a furnace filter over the air intake and it works great. I've gone through several pre-filters in the last decade, but am still on the first HEPA and it still has excellent flow. RR

Thanks, RR. I've been debating ordering a flowhood vs. building one (with my sub par abilities at craftsmanship, likely a bad idea) and you just sealed the deal. Ordering a Series I when I get the cash.

Yes if your HEPA eventually gets clogged you can unscrew front of series I and replace.

Dimensions on that one looks like 24x24(x16)" Which would have the same area as mine.
I have lifted it, even up a flight of stairs, but if you're not in pretty good physical shape I wouldn't risk it. They're heavy and really odd shaped.

series 1 is 24" x 12". I too can carry my 24" x 24", but it is bulky and much eaiser with 2 people. I'd imagine a series 1 would be fairly heavy too, but doable by one's self.

Oops, when I said 'that one' I meant the RR one a couple posts above mine. Yeah 12x24 should be doable as well.

When the hepa filter is old, does the flow hood need to be taken completely apart in order to replace it?
You remove ten screws from the front and the filter can be changed easily. If you're doing agar work or supplemented sawdust blocks, or grain to grain transfers, a flowhood is a must. I wouldn't be without one.
The series one only weighs about 35 lbs. One person can easily carry it around. I take mine on new culture expeditions, and use it in the hotel room at night to clone specimens. RR

Yeah I built one with the Fungi Perfecti 18"x24"x5.8" Filter. Definitely not a portable beast. Its hard enough for one person to get it through doorways. I'd go 12x24 if i could do it again.

Hello. Do you still recommend that flow hood? What would be a good small flow hood? Thanks.
