very large aborts
    #1018300 - 11/03/02 02:06 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

my PF cakes (with puerto rican strain) are producing inadequately:

* pinning for each cake is average-weak
* immature mushrooms grow to be ~ 3 inches long and 1/2 inch thick and then abort
* the mushrooms that do mature look very healthy until the veil breaks, then their stems grow very thin and they droop onto the perlite and are unable to support themselves

this has been going on for 2 weeks...

any help/ suggestions?

temps range from 70-76 ....  using perlite to hold moisture    there's condensation on the walls of terrarium ... using a few hrs each day of light from flash light

I find that PR's perform better on casings.
You might want to try to dunk then break up the cake/cakes and case them.
I had somewhat the same problem on casings with small fruits and just recased after the first flush. It may have something to do with access humidity too.

Your Q's are just tough ones to try to answer. It could be any number of things. Not enough nutes in the cakes. Some sort of shock. Sometimes when you get lots of pins. There are not enough nutes to go around. The myc network simply cuts off the supply of nutes to some smaller ones, so those better established have a better opportunity to fruit & release spores. Long spindly skinny shrooms is a sign of them not getting the right light.  Falling over is simply something they do when their fruit weight exceeds the capacity of the myc network to hold them up.
Sorry that is not much help.

I am having the same problem with the PR strain. I also have the same temps. as you. I used wheat berries cased with coir. I had a shitload of 3-4 inch aborts. 2 grams dry did it for me!

I got my strain from sporeworks.

Once again my point has been made.
I also ordered a PR print from Sporeworks and all it grew was massive aborts.
So I took advice and grew them out on bulk tubs with identical results except bigger aborts.
I grew some 5" aborts, only half an abort was necessary to Become mighty twisted.
I did mail Sporeworks about this and they told me to fan more and to apply a thicker casing layer.
I did both ideas as adviced and still the problem persisted.
I`m begginning to think certain PR prints being sold by SPoreworks are in fact genetically inferior/ undomesticated.
I`v reasently recieved a PR isolate from a fellow cultivator which has proven to be way more consistent and produces even flushes of mature mushrooms.

I had the same problems when I tried out PR's, though I got them from a different vendor. I didn't care to much for that strain, doing some EQ's now and they are MUCH better. Just my couple of cents.

I personally thought it was an incredible strain, if not for growth but for shear potency.
