Homestead Kit Temperature
    #1017880 - 11/03/02 07:56 AM (22 years, 1 month ago)

Before anyone flames me for purchasing an EZ Grow Kit I'll just let you know that it was given to me from a friend whom bought 2. Now on with my question. I'm getting pretty interested in the cultivation of shrooms (I've been growing other things for quite some time now) now. My question:

After the rye berries are completely white and ready to be mixed with the compost to sit and grow... it says that I should have them on a shelf (in the container provided) with a constant temperature of 80 degrees (F). I was wondering if the whole process would fail if I kept them at a temperature of say, 70 degrees (F)? Please enlighten me someone! Much thanks in advance!

Never used a grow kit. But 80% if thats the instruction sounds like the incubation temp to colonise the compost. 70% will work but will take a longer. The other problem is that 70% in nearer the fruiting temperature range and you would normally drop the temp from 85 to 75 to iniate pinning.

Personally I would stick the pot next to your boiler or in an airing cupboard. (those are UK terms don't know what you call then in USA/Canada) to bring the temp closer to 80.

I didn't know that the FAQ also helped with Grow Kits. I was under the impression that the FAQ's were more for people whom grow shrooms the correct way, and put time into it (the way I'd like to soon learn and do). I'll go check that out.

Thanks for the information about the boiler... would that be my heating unit, most likely in my basement? What is an airing cupboard? Sorry, bare with me, I'm American

Thanks again,

An airing cupboard is a cupboard in a typical british home, it contains the Hot water tank/imersion heater for the house.  It is insulated by  a thick jacket of poly foam.  The cupboard tend to be 5 to 10 degrees warmer than any other part of the house.

It is also commonly used as a place for home brew growers to store their beer for the same reason - warmth.

Thanks! Oh, and one more quick question. I know that regular grow set-ups tend to stink pretty badly. With this kit, will it do the same? (I'm guessing that it will?)

Kepp the temp in the optimum range , no it will not kill it , but will slow growth to a point where contams could take over . You also want temps as close as possible to what HS reccomends , for gaurantee reasons .
Good Luck
