I always heard dogs made better pets than chimps. One of best friends had a chimp as a family pet growing up. He said it was the nastiest meanest pet you could imagine. It used to shit in its hand and toss it all over the room. And if you weren't careful it would bite the crap out of you.
The Disney movies made them seem so nice.

Much of it IMO would be based on the experiences said dog or chimp has had at the hands of humans. I have seen some mean dogs that would break your heart if you heard why they had to become that way. Humans sometimes suck so fucking much I can hardly stand it.

They are usually better looking then the primate group. Nice and furry. They (dogs in this case) enjoy many of the activities I like.
In some ways they are more advanced than we are and we can learn from them. Most important our damned pets don't have to work. That in itself sustains enlightenment.

I have learned a lot from my dogs. They are so genuine. I wish I had the character of my past dog Ki. He was so solid and dependable and just plain nice. I really have little of those traits. I almost never had him on a leash and he was always at my side. I miss him more than any person I have ever lost.

However much I loved him and thought him special I think most non abused dogs have these character traits. I see it all the time.

Very touching posts.
For some reason, animals, particularly dogs, are able to give and receive love in a way humans can't. Maybe it's because they lack reason.

I suspect it's because they have fur. Seriously. In part.

As my bald former teacher used to say, "You can't have hair and brains both."
Any baldies want to comment on that?

The ability to reason (as I am using it), as it is bounded by rational thought, is constituted by logical proofs and disproofs. If you spot a dog doing this please provide evidence.
Reason, the noun: The capacity for logical, rational, and analytic thought; intelligence.
Reason, the intransitive verb: 1. To use the faculty of reason; think logically.
Dogs are able to use their cognitive powers to locate objects, etc. However, that relies on perceptual abstraction. Even some of the lower forms of life have been imbued with that power. Calling that the ability to reason is like saying a calculator is a mathematician because it can do sums when properly used.
There was a guy named Pavlov that did some experiments once. They were neat.

The best evidence I have seen for this is among Grizzly bears. Dogs have it to. Anyone doing research on or working with these animals (oh yeah chimps and such too) will know.

That's a big kettle of fish. Much of the research done with animals by these people is decidedly biased and lacks objectivity. Penny Patterson and Koko are a prime example.
Lips apple give me. I'm sure I understand.
