bacteria
    #1015301 - 11/02/02 08:20 AM (21 years, 3 months ago)

Hello.
I have been having alot of problems with bacetia in my jars lately. In the last 2 months I haven't gotten a single fully colonized jar. Mostly it seems to be due to bacteria. Could be a problem with the spores, but I do not think so.
I use a pure rice substrate, sometimes it gets a bit too wet, but usually it's fine. I cook the jars for about an hour, let them cool for a few hours, and then innoculate them and place them in boxes where the heat is about 83 i think. They are cleaned with bleech first.
Any ideas what might be my problem?

A while back I was having problems with bacterial contamination. After several successful grows I began losing every BRF jar to bacteria. I eventually traced to problem to the rice flour itself. I had changed brands of flour to save money and the new flour was contaminated with something that just boiling could not kill. I went bck to my old brand of flour - problem solved!

Have you recently changed anything in your cultivation?

Do you think you're letting them cool enough before innocualtion? Maybe there's still enough heat to be killing spores up front and resulting in poor colonization....

What kinda "Box" are you talking about? If its an incubator that uses water..That would be my guess! I've had all kinds of problems with moisture and bacteria in my incubator (legal mushrooms of course) I've switched to a 7 watt nightlight inside a styrofoam cooler,no moisture,no bacteria!

Maybe using 'organic' rice flour from a health food store might prove to be benificial??? With the organic labeling...you are dealing with no pesticides...no bleaching process or other chemicals agents?
I hope that is what solves your problem!

Ah, Yes I have changed the lable of rice im using. I can't quite recall what I used before though.
And I have only recently started using an incubator, also, and yeah it uses water.. so one of those two things are probably it.
I think I let the jars cool enough, but I'll start waiting longer along with changing rice and rebuilding the incubator.
Thanks all !
