Dear everyone who thinks New Jersey is an industrial wasteland,
    #10176777 - 04/16/09 09:33 AM (14 years, 11 months ago)

You are wrong. Only northeast Jersey along the coast is an industrial wasteland. You know, like where I live.

BUT! The rest of Jersey is actually pretty damn interesting as far as nature goes. I'm taking this field ecology course where we just go to random aquatic environments and catch pretty much everything we can that lives in and around water.

Did you know that Jersey has a pretty damn big swamp? It's called Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge and it's about 12 square miles. They were going to build Newark Liberty International Airport over the swamp, but the people who lived in the area weren't having it so they bought the land before the contractor could.

I went to that swamp to do a field study on the distribution of Spring Peepers Frogs (Pseudacris crucifer) within their breeding grounds. I took my camera, but I only got a few pics. Believe it or not swamps are wet, muddy, and smell like shit (well ok, hydrogen sulfide, not shit) and that's a bad environment for a camera. Especially when you're waste deep in chest waders trying to get through the mud.

Here are the few pics I did take...

First thing we did was set up our plots then we had a ton of time to kill because the frogs didn't come out till it got dark. We went to this boardwalk over part of the swamp. Apparently this part of the swamp was a breeding ground for the Northern Banded Water Snake. We probably saw about 50+

I counted 10 snakes in this picture

We saw about 15 turtles here, including a 14 inch Common Snapping Turtle.

Eastern Painted Turtle, these things were everywhere and very curious about what the people on the boardwalk were doing. You'd see them just sitting on branches looking at the boardwalk or they'd occasionally swim up to it.

Before we got dinner we stopped at a birds of prey rehab center, saw just about every bird of prey in the US. This is a Bald Eagle. I've seen them in the wild, but never up close. I shit you not this guy stood about 3 feet tall, they're fucking massive.

And here's some more Jersey pics of a morel hunt a few years ago that I did with shroomerite neuro:

Jersey is great, i used to hang out in Newark (QXT's FTW) its kind of a slum but its not as bad as everyone says, i smoked a sherm stick across the street from a cop, that was a fun experience.

Theres some creepy guys in Dover, some Ghetto chic's in Jersey City. Hoboken is a favorite of mine because its so close to Manhatten you can take the train right in. Benny Tudino's is some of the best pizza i ever had in my life.

LBI is very nice, and the Pine Barrons are wonderful!!! NJMA runs some very cool forays in Jersey.

honestly i think it has alot more to offer then PA, but thats just my opinion

I'm pretty sure New Jersey is an industrial wasteland.

Like, really pretty sure.

Hey buddy, fuck you. You live in Ohio. Enjoy your corn fields, tobacco fields, Amish people, and flat land. I got accepted to OSU and thought about going there, but once I visited I realized an enema of sulfuric acid would probably be more fun than spending 4 years of my life in Columbus. I'll take Jersey over Ohio any day, thanks.

QXT's?
Newark's only bad in certain parts, as long as you stick to The Ironbound, Downtown, and University Heights you SHOULD be fine. You avoid South and West Newark and ANY project.

I think The Ironbound is my favorite part of Newark. Great food, nice people, no bums, hardly any crime, clubs, bars, nice stores. Those Portuguese and Brazilians know how to party like motherfuckers too. Every summer they have Portuguese Fest where they shut down about a mile of Ferry St. for this huge ass 3 day party. Lots of cheap strong drinks, good food and good music. I'd tell ya the girls are hot but I saw too many flabby 40-50 somethings who dressed like they were still in their 20s (maybe it's the culture?). Fun time though, I think anyone in the area should try to make it out for at least one day of the fest.

And yeah, Hoboken is a shitload of fun, I have a lot of friends who live over there. One of them has an apartment on the street where they have the St. Patty's parade. We got a few kegs and about 30-40 people and started drinkin' at 10am for the last parade. Great time. And I also go to Benny Tudino's every time I'm in Hoboken, weird. Weehawken is pretty cool too.

One thing I've yet to do since I moved up here is go down the shore. I'm reluctant. I don't think I could take the level of douchebaggery that is present there.

Also, Atlantic City is :awesome:

No, Ohio is pretty much a shit-hole as well..

I don't much care for wastelands, be they industrial or agricultural.

you are right about the shores. i avoid wildwood and even seaside now. i went to LBI last summer and stayed in a house on the beach. it was nice because the beach was bare, but the people around the immediate town were quite posh, very stuck up and judgemental. i got laughed at by quite a few "surfer dudes".

got to love the "surfer dudes" of NJ, they sure get some big "tsunami's" there :hehehe:

QXT's is an electro club i used to frequent, until they started to let underage girls in

Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of places along the coast that ARE industrial wastelands. About 3 weeks ago I did a study on a wildlife reclamation area. During the industrial revolution the soil in the area (Liberty State Park) was heavily contaminated with chromium, nickle, and iron. We were checking on the wildlife progress of the reclaimed area and it was doing pretty damn well. I managed to find an endangered species of turtle in the Hudson right next to the reclamation area.

But still, there are a ton of Superfund sites around North Jersey, South Jersey has very few. Superfund is like the worst of the worst in environmental contamination. I don't think they can fix all the heavy metals, but hey, at least they have it contained and stopped the source of the contamination

Nice pics....

Atlantic city is a giant thumbs down.

Rip off artists on every square inch of the boardwalk and it had the most absurd rules ever.

I shit you not ,2 full size pieces of plywood{4 foot by 8 foot} covered from top to bottom in small print were the rules for the beach ...:rofl2:..Rules for a beach...:rofl2:

No swimming,no radios,no food ,no dogs, There must have been 100 rules on each sign.......it was the most pathetic thing I had ever seen on a beach.

Come on out to cali for some nice beaches with no 64 square foot signs of rules

The mall over the water was cool ,by cool,I mean cool to look at ,inside it was just another mall. The casinos had a gritty feel to them.......all I saw was the boardwalk area ........but it was nothing special and I felt like I should be packin heat or atleast a rambo knife for security and it had a smell to it .It was cool to check out ,but I will never go back...

Bullhead city or vegas was much better.

Yeah, but you know what's way cooler?

Mountains, swamps, wetlands/marshes, deserts, floodplains, coastal dunes, rain forests, beaches, coral reefs, deciduous forests, pine forests, scrublands, mangroves.... you get the point.

Nobody goes for the beach ....it was just another point on how shitty it was ......what a vacation spot....:nonono:

If your just going to hole up in a casino ....why goes there anyway. Its just one of a 100 cities that have casino`s and the other ones are much better.....

It was nice catching trout on the colorado river in bullhead city while gamblin...it was also cool to see the town with all the donkeys walking the street...yep lots to do there with no billboard of rules.Go shoot machine guns for the price of bullets ,take jet boat rides ,play on the jetski, giant golf course, they sell fireworks and have a place you shoot them off,big fireworks.
Nice scenic mountains and bullhead city is considered to be not that good of a spot.

Sorry I have been alot of places and I would rank atlantic city low on the list.

Because AC is in NJ, and all the other places are farther than Jersey (aside from Turning Stone.)

That's fine, I would never go to AC if I was from California.
Just like I'll probably never go to Vegas. Too far for a bunch of flashing lights and casinos. They got that shit at AC.

I think you have to be a gambling man or a drinker to appreciate AC. I'm the latter so I had fun.

I wouldn't waste my time on AC's beaches. Last time I was there I saw a syringe in the water. No AIDS for me, kthx. Like you said, no one goes to AC for the beach, they go for drinking, gambling, and hookers.

Vegas is over rated, its cool to go and see ,the shows are pretty good.
I am glad I have been there,,but yeah, its just vegas, its worth checking out to say you have been there.

I want to check out reno ,thats suppose to pretty good.

Now I will give the racing complex a giant thumbs up in vegas .....we could see the track from inside of the motorhome ....

The coolest part about Vegas is how HUGE everything is. The first time we walked into the Luxor, we were all amazed!

Walking down the strip at night is an experience everyone should have at least once!

That and shore bitches is why I've been reluctant to go down the shore. I've met them away from the beach and they suck at life, I don't even want to see them in their own environment. I'm sure the douchebaggery would increase ten fold.

I will probably go this summer with some friends. Like I said in a previous post, I'm gonna bring my camera and get some pics of the tards. I'll try to borrow a telephoto lens so I don't have to deal with "Hey what da fuck you doin takin pics of me and my girlie, guy? You some kinda homo? I'll fuck you up... After I finish my Heineken."

I get invited to a shitload of events at Sandbar. You ever been there AJ?

Apple Pie Hill is one of the highest points in the Pine Barrens, at 209 feet above sea level. It can be reached by taking Route 532 West from Route 206 or by taking Route 532 East from Route 563. Located in Tabernacle Township, no one knows how Apple Pie Hill got its name, though there is speculation that it shape resemples an apple pie.

Today there stands a 60 foot fire tower which affords the visitor an one of the most incredible views of the Pines available. From there one can view of the west branch of the Wading River, with pine forests covering a level plain that stretches to the horizon in all directions. The only other features visible are a few cranberry bogs to the southeast, the tops of distant towers in Atlantic City to the east, and the tops of skyscrapers in Philadelphia to the west. (One can literally view the east-west extent of the State of New Jersey from here.) On a clear day it is possible to see several hilly escarpments far to the north.. It is a favorite spot of picnickers, and makes a great day hike from the Carranza Memorial along the pink-blazed Batona trail. Starting from the Carranza Memorial the hiker will encounter two hills, the first known as "Tea Time Hill", and the second, "Apple Pie Hill".

Great OP, I agree completely.  I spent the first decade of my life (and 4 weekends a year since then) in Jersey, and I have much love for the state.  People talk way too much shit about it:  Sure, there's a bunch of guidos and new fuckin haircuts - but for the most part it's just as chill as anywhere else.

i love how your people rally together and do shit like that ie bought the swamp

here we have no chance cause we're practically thirdworld

the multinational companies own our polititcians and you cant out bid  conglomerates especially a greedy ones

same as our housing market

its hard for first time home owners to get a fair price on a home at an auction when the other bidders have cell phones and are agents for foriegn buyers

all the land and homes here in sydney are overpriced

Yeah I think everyone bases their opinion of Jersey on what they see when they fly into the Newark airport on their way to NYC... And that IS an industrial wasteland. All of Port Newark-Elizabeth is industrial wasteland.

blewmeanie: I didn't know the northeast had swamps either. The pics you posted is what I would call a real swamp. When I think swamp I think alligators and venomous snakes and shit. Jersey's swamps aren't that bad though.

Swamps are definitely one of me favorite environments/habitats/biomes/whatever to explore, albeit not a very easy place to explore unless boardwalks and trails have been made. I prefer just getting out there in a boat or waders and checking shit out on my own.

What swamp was that you posted pictures of? Do you have any evil villain in you? Want me to send you some piranhas so you can destroy the ecosystem? I'd do it.

I think those north eastern forests are purdy.

I live in the rockies, and the mountains here are insanely beautiful, but the forests are mostly pines.  I would be lost without the mountains in the distance though, I'd never be able to get my bearings.

I think this has inspired me to go on a hike tomorrow.
