Puffball Confirmation ID
    #10164325 - 04/14/09 02:03 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

I was looking around today after a big rain in east Texas and found this puffball. I just want to know what it is for sure, and how good it is to eat.

It was found growing on a burnsite, with a bunch of others of the same species, Has a small stem, is pure white on the inside, and has a smooth surface.

Could be. I was growing in a field on the remains of a burn pile. They where also fairly isolated and not clumped together like the one on mushroom expert. very White also.

My first guess would be a Bovista sp. but it is kinda pear shaped. Was there any threads attached at the base. It looks like you might have scraped them off. Did you do a cross section of another. It might help to see the interior. Was it partly buried in the ground? Lipa

Was there any mature specimens. That looks kinda young.

Morganella are not smooth, like this one.

I think Lipa is on the right track with Bovista.

Are these growing on the ground or on wood?

Some pics of some older ones would help a lot.

The smoothness can vary a lot with age. Alan asked a great question. Wood makes a big difference. |Maybe buried wood from what was being burned maybe|?

They are growing on the ground in a field, with the closest Pine tree at about 30ft away, so I think they would be considered growing on the ground and not off trees, unless they are growing off the burned ash.

There where older speccimens with a slight yellowing to browning.

This specimen was handled a little bit, as some of the untouched ones had very small spines.

Lycoperdon sp.

bovista can scale off and look like it has spines but it doesn't. That you say yellow to brown in the older specimens with small spines and the pear shaped body makes me say lycoperdon. Morganella pyriformis is a great guess although it is very difficult to id puffballs by their macroscopic features alone.

I'd love to have one of those specimens to id!

Ahh, okay then.  I figured they were smooth when you first collected them.

As you guys point out, Lycoperdon sounds most probable.

Vascellum is another option, though they typically grow from grass or soil that has a lot of leafy plant debri.
