Yep looks like bruising. If you swab a Q-tip across it and it comes away clean, you can know for sure. Bruising happens whenever the mycelium gets roughed up, nothing to worry about.

Init, that's untrue to the upmost.
It DOES come off even if it is just bruising.
It probably is just bruising though, and that's what it looks like.

My bad, a quick search reveals that you are indeed correct. I wasn't aware that the bruised mycelium could rub off. Maybe I'm just really gentle with my q-tips.
OP, I imagine you're still fine, but disregard the q-tip advice.

I know you got it figured out, but for anyone else wondering:
If you barely touch a q-tip (no pressure) to mold spores, they will transfer, mycelium will not. Also if you look closely you will see that mold spores are generally more flat and grainy looking, while brusing is part of the mycelium and will still have curves where the growth had occurred.

Q-tip test seems to be debated.

Even if it is mold, which it doesn't look like it (but I'm new), does it matter if it's just on the tip of some fruit and not affecting the substrate?

If it were mold and you were seeing spores. It is quite bad. That means that there are thousands (if not millions upon millions) of spores already released and it could contaminate your whole grow area.

I guess mold vs bruising comes up a lot because there are a ton of threads on this:
mold will wash off, bruising won't: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/10111836#10111836 mold spores look like green sand on top of substrate: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/9964169#9964169

So say hypothetically (unlikely) the OP has mold on one of their cakes. What should they do? Throw out all their cakes? Just wondering, thanks..

Yep, chuck it and hope that everything else in the FC is OK.
ORRRR you could be risky and salt-paste it to finish out the flush (on cakes this is pretty useless, but on a nice big monotub, you may consider it)
Quite hard to see anything in the pictures, but it does not look like any mold that I have encountered.

Also just found this as an option to do with contaminated substrates: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/6672859#6672859

Yep, and spent ones as well. Dump everything living into some sort of soil and someday you will be rewarded.

Ah cool, didn't know that would/might work with spent ones too. Sounds awesome, like putting seeds in compost and then getting surprises in the garden. Thanks
