Stinky smelly caps
    #1016099 - 11/02/02 05:13 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Yesterday i harvested the shrooms from a casing, and took some caps to make some prints. I usually use an airtight tupperware container. This time i used one with a hole with polyfill for some air exchange because i had had a tip from a friend that some air exchange would result in darker prints.

Well, today, as i opened the tupperware to remove the caps and let the prints dry, i had an unpleasant surprise.
All the caps were blue, covered in a sticky liquid and smelled somewhat like rye grain smells when it's infected by bacillus bacteria.

Was it the pollyfilled hole that caused that?
That had only happened to me once (when i left for a weekend out and left the caps for 4 days in a container).

Any help?

I doubt it. The Polyfill plug should only allow gas exchange not bugs.
Was the container really clean? How did you move the caps from the chamber to the container (with sticky fingers?)

Sounds like they rotted. I would only leave the cup on it for 12 hours max. I tap the cap right before I remove the cap from the paper And have got dark prints

In my experience, spores stick to index cards after drying. I mean REALLY stick, as in i couldnt get anything off of 2 different prints. Since then i have moved to foil, and have had nothing but success.

Well i think so also, but it was the first time something like that happened to me in 24h...It was also the first time i used polyfill for spore printing. But if polyfill can keep contams out of grain it obviously should keep them out of living shroom caps.

The container had been soaked in a potent bleach:water mix and I moved the caps the way i usually do (i wash my hands, then soak them in 96% alcohol and avoid as much as i can touching the caps with my hands).

Nothing to do now but throw away the container and make other prints.

Thanks for the help!
