Help with Paper on "Ethics"
    #9978965 - 03/16/09 12:18 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

So I've got a paper in which I need to define "ethics" using "at least five different perspectives" and "explore controversial situations that highlight the key problems in defining ethics"

But I don't really know where to start or which five people to use.

So I guess what i'm asking for is authors on the subject, preferably various philosophers.

Thanks

I hate this shit.  Cuz really, I believe in what I believe in, and it is difficult to defend shit you don't believe in.

Best I would say is refer to who believes what and why when you mention shit you don't believe in.

Different types of perspectives are listed and linked here.

Not diffiult, just pick a few and look em up on wikipedia and find sources with google scholar.  Bam, you're done.

You should just steal someone else's paper, so that you don't have to do the work.

I assume he's studying because he actually wants to learn how to do the work.

I'll be your tutor, you have to do the real work on your own though.

If this is a beginning course and you're at an American university your teacher probably doesn't want philosophers. Although mentioning a few names will help you as a philosopher and make your paper better. Unfortunately most professors these days are horny for secondary sources (instead of actual philosophical texts) and pigeon-holes like deontological ethics, relativism, precriptivism, egoism, Kantian ethics, utilitarianism, etc.

Do these situations have to relate to each category individually, or all?

Here's a possible structure for your paper.

5 perspetives w/ 1 situation each:

Kantian ethics (categorical imperative): You're in charge of national security and someone asks you where the nuclear warheads are. The dilemma: you abide by the priniciple "never lie". Do you tell them?

Deontological: Obligations. Mention justice. Everyone should get it, but you might prevent if you commit a crime.

Virtue/Aristotelean ethics: Act in accordance with your best to achieve happiness. Problem: what actions are allowed and which are not allowed? This focuses on character properties rather than rules of ethics. How can we know what's right or wrong between individuals or societies?

Utilitarianism. Benefit for all/the whole outweighs individual benefit. Ends justify the means: kill one person to save 30.

Relativism. No objective ethical standpoint. Always relative to culture. Question: slavery OK in Canada but not in USA?

There you go. Put some meat on the skeleton.

to the OP, how did you do? Did you end up cheating just to enjoy the sweet sweet irony?

Sorry I should have kept up with this. I got a 95% on it, and I wrote about various viewpoints, essentially what Lakefingers described, using the the idea of suicide and how each of the viewpoints would see the act.

Sounds interesting and you did good. I personally would have got caught up in the irony of cheating on an ethics essay and likely would have settled for much less marks-wise in the end because of it.

if you want to go obvious there is Kant and his categorical imperative,

Aristotle and virtue ethics,

St. Thomas Aquinas, and natural law

St. Anselm and the Ontological argument

I hope this helps and i hope you do well :thumbup::mushroom2:

Good job. BTW I like how you chose suicide and flipped it around in different lights.
