Yes it will work. Just works slightly better is it's course for the cake (less compact - easier to colonize)

I use the fine vermiculite, because that is all I can get here in Ga, just try not to pack your jars to tight, I also like to ass coffee beans to the jars it puts those air pockets in there..

AFOAF told me about his first grow wich was BULK PF Tek. He found that fine Vermiculite would mix more evenly whem preparing the substrate. Colonisation was slower with coarse Vermiculte. I would be intrested to hear if others had the same results.

Peace

Fine vermiculite is ALL my friend uses... it has a tendency to compact, but as stated, it is much easier for the mycelium to colonize.

No, this monkey I bumped into the other day made more sense. I mean, if you have bigger pieces of vermiculite then the subtrate will be more pourous (More space between each piece of vermiculite allowing the mycellium some room to move)...but anyways, the whole point of the question was " Will fine vermiculite work?" And yeah it works just fine. If your into micro-managing your hobby then youll go on for ever with these little arguments/decisions...just IMO though...good luck!

i must agree... fine is great for cakes... a  little owl i know used it on his cakes and had decent results, but i must admit the course verm does colonize much quicker since the small spaces between the substrate move quicker.. works wnderful with cases but would not recomend it for cakes although ive seen results with both

O lord.. to see such comments almost angers me. I can barely type because I want to scream.. at you that is. But I'm gonna keep my mouth shut this time, since I was just told i was quick to rag on people. If you can explain your theory in full detail of why you think fine verm is so much better, then I may consider reviewing my thoughts.

well, contrary to what everyone sayz..here's a picture my buddy emailed me..he says he wondered the same thing, and after much research, decided to try both..here's what happened..on the left is the fine stuff..not even fully colonized yet..on the right is the coarse stuff, which has already been cased for a few days (after 100% colonisation)..he says both were eq strain made on the same day..he sayz this happened to all the fine/coarse jars he made..but i guess thats just his experience..he thinks an airy and a unpacked substance is absolutly nessacary for the myc to grow fast and free..but YMMV..

Why don't you just go to the store, I found a huge bag (18 pounds) for something like $12.

I tried both, and sticked with the one on the left:

You can't draw any conclusions from only using a dozen jars of each. Try doing this for years and you will find that the fine verm is definately better.
