shotgun tek - poor man lacks a drill
    #10152333 - 04/12/09 02:07 PM (15 years, 7 days ago)

I don't have a drill.

Preface: I am using a large rubbermaid container. It's blue and not translucent. I cut a hole in the lid to let light in and taped some clear kitchen wrap over the hole (so that they mushrooms will grow skyward).

Now, I have two questions:

(1) I only have about 2 inches of perlite at the bottom. How much does it matter that I don' thave the recommended 3-5 inches?

(2) I don't have a drill. I used a knife to make holes in the container. but this was really strenuous, and unless I absolutely have to, I am not feeling too enthused about making any more holes. I have a SINGLE ROW of holes, spaced about 3-5 inches apart along the perimeter of the container. I also have a fan blowing in through one side of the holes and a space heater that I can (if you guys recommend it) aim into the back of the fan (so that the fan blows hot air from it into the container).

What do you think?

matters alot you need the 5" to keep humidity up.

you need 1/4"holes on all six sides for the air to wick moisture up through the perlite giving you a high enough Rh for your mushies.

dont blow heat on your FC it will dry out what little perlite you have. just keep temps in the room stable.

use a soldering iron or something to that extent to melt through the plastic.

I have holes all over the bottom of the container. But on the sides, I only have one row around the entire perimeter of the box. Should I make another row?

Don't even step foot in walmart to steal.  You'll catch coodies from the trash in there.

Heat up an ice pick or nail and melt the holes if you can't afford a drill.  Make them per the tek if you want it to function.  Don't cut corners on growing or you'll fail.

exactly what i was going to suggest, thats what i done with my minitub tub which uses a row of 1/4 inch holes.

Anyway, your fruiting chamber sounds like my first attempt, i got some mushrooms but performance was poor.

My mate is using a bucket that he drilled 1 1/2 inch holes along the perlite level, then micropore taped up. Performance in that was terrible and 1 of the cakes contamed with green.

Make the terrarium like the tek, its not just for fresh air, but it actually helps with humidity too.

well worth the effort.

I've been using a knife to make holes. I worked construction for a couple years so I have a good idea of what 1/4" holes look like. It was a pain in the ass, but I now have ~4.5in. perlite, 1/4" holes all over the bottom of the container, and two rows of 1/4" holes on every other side. I also have a fan blowing in through the bottom. Is that a good idea?

When the guy above said "rent" a drill, he meant, go buy one and then return it when you're through

I know what he meant

I opted not to do that, though. I thought it sounded like a lot of trouble. The knife is working just fine.

dont use a fan blowing at your terrarium, it will dry out the air. Come back to your terarium and finsih the rest of the holes.

Alright. I get from you all that there is no way out of making a shitload of holes. So I will do that.
-However, I'm wondering why that's necessary. Is this for circulation? And how much does it have to do with humidity? If it's mainly for humidity and I'm already at about 95%, do I really need more holes?

And if it's for circulation, can't I do less holes with a fan blowing in?

Also, do I need holes on the sides where the perlite is? Or do the holes start where the perlite ends?

And how about the inside temperature? What should that be?

Sorry for all these questions.

Looks like the OP had his problem solved, but I have a question myself that may be of interest to him as well.

Is it possible to have TOO many (1/4") holes in your Shotgun FC? I'm using a 64 quart container and followed the video pretty closely, and spaced my holes about as far as RR did, I could say there's easily 2-300+ holes around the entire thing.

It just seems like moisture would escape quickly, and contaminants could make it in.

quit being a cheap ass. you can get a dinky drill for 20 bux. and it's not a lot of work to buy one, use it, and return it, so quit being lazy too. do you want shrooms or do you want to complain about spending 20 bux?

What in the world are you talking about man? I never said anything about drills, all I asked was whether or not it was possible to put too many holes in your FC. I am indeed the proud owner of a drill, 2 of them actually.

I used a $2 butane torch lighter and it worked wonders for me, if you have a steady hand you will have perfect circles plus it will self seal if your putting in vents.

5" of perlite is enough to keep Rh up for a month in that setup and contams arnt a big issue with fully colonized cakes.  the myc form a shrink wrap like barrier around the cake making it hard for contams to get a foothold on the substrate(brf)plus thats why all the holes to keep stale air away from your cakes thus FAE helps against contams.

I'm with DZ on this one, if you can't spend $20-30 on something to help grow shrooms, then maybe shroom-growing isn't for you. Then again, I spent a ridiculous $150 on my fruiting chamber, growing and sterilizing supplies (clear Tupperware container, 2 high-output air pumps, outlet timers, 1/2 canning jars, spore syringe, and many more).I just bought a generic, pretty-weak 7.2 volt power drill for only $25. Pretty small price to pay for a tool that can be used for a lot things even within this hobby. For instance, I just used that drill to help build my new glove box (drilling a hole made it easier to cut out the arm holes.

HOWEVER, I will forgive you for not wanting to spend money since we are in a Economic Recession right now in the US, something that silly DZ forgot to consider.

If you are really tight on cash, I would recommend buying a manual analog of the power drill called a "Tap Drill". The Tap Drill, like its name, is in the shape of a captial "T". You can find them at Home Depot or Lowes for $8 near the drill bits in the Power Tools section. Don't forgot to buy a 1/4 or 3/8 drill bit that fits inside Tap Drill. Using the Tap Drill is pretty tiring, but it should be easier than the knife your using.
