BRF cakes have been birthed for 12 days and look the same. why?
    #10142633 - 04/10/09 01:53 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

In a hypothetical, imaginary world, a guy was trying to grow P. cubensis on BRF cakes. When the time was right, the cakes were transfered into a grow chamber. 12 days later, the cakes look exactly the same as the day they were birthed.  The inoculation jars were kept at 80 degrees. When cakes were birthed, they were put into a cooler that was 65 degrees, 95% humidity. The cooler temp was raised to 75 degrees, humidity remained at 95%.the cooler recieved 2-4 hours of flouresent light daily.  12 days later they looked exactly the same. there is no fluffy white mycilium. no noticable growth of any kinds. Are the cakes dead? what do dead cakes look like? why no growth? what can be done to make them grow?

the cakes need about 12 hours of light and FAE and 75 is good i think 65 is a little cold they say room temp is best

I can see 2 potential issues:

1) Your cakes should be getting more light. The magic number most people work with is 12 hours of light, 12 hours of darkness. You should also be using a lightbulb in the "daylight" color range, with a color temperature of about 6500K. It's on the bluer side of the spectrum, so if your light is reddish at all, it's no good. You should give your cakes natural indirect sunlight or go purchase a 6500K CFL bulb.

2) You mentioned nothing about fresh air. Are you fanning your cakes at all? They don't like stale, CO2-rich air. I'm guessing your cooler has no holes in it, so that's a concern as well. You might consider building a shotgun fruiting chamber instead of using the cooler.

Fresh air, proper lighting, and high humidity are all important pinning triggers. Make sure you're giving those to your cakes.

well
1) they need alot more light, 12/18/24 are the times used for light...there is no such thing as too much, but 2-4 hours is def too little as light is  a pinning trigger
2)incubation of the inoculated jars doesnt matter much, as long as temps are ~70-80 its all good
3) your fruiting temps are wayyyyyy too low, and RH should be %100, fruiting temps are ~80, though they can grow lower, it just helps alot if they are around eighty...

did you dunk and roll the cakes? if not it might be a good idea, especially if they have shown no growth
hopefully this helps,
gl
