Cordyceps, what is the mannitol ingredient(?)
    #10128438 - 04/08/09 07:48 AM (14 years, 10 months ago)

Hi Folks, I have noticed that on some of the Cordyceps products sold in health-food stores that mannitol (a sugar?) is an added ingredient (or am I reading this wrong and it is actually a compound of the mushroom?).  So, for example the typical label reads:

Cordyceps Cs-4 mycelia extract ... 600 mg
Standardized
  Polysacchharides .... 15%
Mannitol .... .......... 7%
Active Compounds: Polysaccharides, sterols and adenosine.

Could someone elaborate or break down what this means(?)  Many thanks(!)  On another note I have found that out of the thousdands of health products I have tried, Reishi has helped me a great deal, which really sparked my interest in mushrooms.  I hope Cordyceps work even better.

Cheers.

I would guess that since it is separate from the cordyceps on the ingredients list, it is an additive. Mannitol is an alcohol sugar, and is used to store energy for the mushroom much like glycogen in our muscles. According to this site, it is the main storage carbon for button mushrooms.

Hi Roger, thanks for the information.  In my search I found a lovely article by John Halliday and Matt Cleaver on Cordyceps in which they state: "Cordycepin [3'-deoxyadenosine] and cordycepic acid [d-mannitol] were the inital bioactive compounds first isolated from C. militaris."  So the mannitol does indeed appear to not be an additive.  Anyways, my interest in this mushroom continues to grow (escuse the pun), and I hope it will help me a great deal(!)

Take care,
