spores from space
    #10133021 - 04/08/09 09:08 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

Does anyone argue that mushroom spores can survive in space. They say since they are made of chitin( strongest organic material)they could survive space and some think some mushrooms traveled through space from another planet.I would disagree. From my stand point I would think they could survive the -200  and 200+ degrees Fahrenheit temps of space, but what about radiation? I think radiation could penetrate chitin. if you say mushrooms came from space, you would have to say all life on this planet was seeded from space( as organic molecules have been).Since mushrooms followed an evolutionary pattern from algae and bacteria as all life sprung from. This theory came from a Fungi Perfecti catalog.

some microbes (not sure which one) could recombine their own dna when its blasted apart from radiation. really awesome.

Quote:

The complete genetic code of the world’s most radiation resistant organism - the bacteria Deinococcus radiodurans - has been detailed by Department of Energy (DOE) funded researchers at The Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR). This strain of pink bacteria can survive 1.5 million rads of gamma irradiation - 3,000 times the amount that would kill a human. That dose of radiation shreds the bacteria’s genome into hundreds of pieces. The organism’s ability to repair this DNA damage in a day and go on living offers researchers clues to the mechanisms of cellular repair. Advances in this area could improve the understanding of cancer, which can be caused by unrepaired DNA damage. Genetically engineering the microbe could lead to improved ways to clean up pollution and to new industrial processes.
