How hot is to hot
    #1012857 - 11/01/02 10:10 AM (21 years, 5 months ago)

My friend wasnt satisfied with his old incubator that seemed to work just fine so he went out and built a new one. The temp in my friends new incubator varies quite a bit through-out the night (77-85.5). Last night, the first full night the jars were in there, the temps rose to 85.5. Is that to hot? Did he ruin the jars. He thinks the temp has to stay in the low 80's (80-81). How high of temp can the mycellium stand before adverse effects start to occure? Thanks for any comments.

P.S. How would you suggest trying to keep the temp more stabalized? What about just laying a few layers of blankets over the rubbermaid to act as insulation? (He has two rubbermaids and a submersible heater, set at 80 degrees, and a digital thermometer to read the temp.

Your jars are fine. 85F is ideal.

After 86F vegative growth retards all the hay to 104F at which thernal death occurs.

85F is fine (it won't hurt things)  Remember though that although the temp may say 85F the jars will be 2 degrees hotter internally.

My big problem (being in the UK) is that its bloody cold all the time

Thank you for the replies. What do ya'll think about insulating the containers? Do you think that layering blankets over the tubs will be enough? My friend is in the process of finding out right now. I hope it stabalizes the temp. Going from 70's to 80's through-out the night like that can not be good, I would'nt think.

I insulate with blankets. I don't understand why you are getting big fluctuations. If your using the submersible fish heater tek then the temp should be consistant. Night time temps in the 70's implies that (a) your fish tank heater does'nt work or (b) It's very cold at night and the incubator is losing heat via radiation which the heater can't keep up with. (c) the thermostatic switch on your heater is crap

I beleive Paul said the optimum temp for colonizing substrate for P.Cubensis is 86f.  Your jars will be fine:)
